I hate this. I'm on the Atkin's Diet, and it basically precludes me from participating in ANY of these culinary activities. It seems like ALL Mexican food is rich in carbs, if for no other reason than the use of the tortilla. Or if they don't use the tortilla in the main dish, you can be sure it's there on the side, and I mean, who can resist that? I was at the plaza too just today. Walking by it, rather. Walking by it so I could purchase Atkin's friendly ingredients from Leys. If it wasn't for salsa, I'd go insane here. I've perfected salsa. Chiles habernero are a gift from God to anyone who is on the Atkin's diet. I shove tomatillos, onions, cillanto, chile haberenos (20, oh yeah) and garlic into the food processor. Then I squeeze some limon over the resulting concoction. And then when I cook anything (usually ground beef) I apply the result in liberal quantities along with a tomato I've sliced up just for the occasion and even though there are no beans or Mexican rice or tortillas, I still feel like I'm eating in Mexico. What were we talking about again? Oh right. As good as my salsa is, it still doesn't make up for not being able to sample what is available on the street here. I actually feel guilty about it. I mean, I pass by somebody who has what is obviously terrific food available and for a cheap price, but I can't partake because it's loaded with carbs. They of course have no idea that I'm on this idiotic diet, so they take it as an offense; as if I don't care for their food. Arrrgh! I'm slowly mastering the art of drinking Tequila. This helps. Cerveza is bad for Atkin's. Tequila is good. At some point I hope to be able to partake of all these culinary masterpieces that await me at each and every corner, but it won't be today. To boldly go where no wig has gone before.
