Oaxaca in the Plaza de la Republica

I went down to the main plaza today (Republica) to check out the Oaxaca tianguis, or whatever you call it. I was kind of disappointed because there were not nearly as many stalls as last year. However, it is supposed to be there for a couple of weeks, so maybe more will show up. There are many stalls selling beautiful clothing. There is jewelry and pastries and liquors and moles. One stall had some black Oaxaca pottery and great looking enameled tin ornaments, but at 4 PM nobody was there. I will go back another time because they have good looking stuff. I was sorry that the huge stall that last year sold all kinds of Oaxaca food (tamales wrapped in banana leaves, giant tacos, etc) wasn't there. I brought food home from there a couple of times last year. And ate my first grasshoppers there! Check it out anyway, it is worth a look. Dee

I hate this. I'm on the Atkin's Diet, and it basically precludes me from participating in ANY of these culinary activities.

It seems like ALL Mexican food is rich in carbs, if for no other reason than the use of the tortilla. Or if they don't use the tortilla in the main dish, you can be sure it's there on the side, and I mean, who can resist that?

I was at the plaza too just today. Walking by it, rather. Walking by it so I could purchase Atkin's friendly ingredients from Leys.

If it wasn't for salsa, I'd go insane here. I've perfected salsa. Chiles habernero are a gift from God to anyone who is on the Atkin's diet. I shove tomatillos, onions, cillanto, chile haberenos (20, oh yeah) and garlic into the food processor. Then I squeeze some limon over the resulting concoction. And then when I cook anything (usually ground beef) I apply the result in liberal quantities along with a tomato I've sliced up just for the occasion and even though there are no beans or Mexican rice or tortillas, I still feel like I'm eating in Mexico.

What were we talking about again?

Oh right. As good as my salsa is, it still doesn't make up for not being able to sample what is available on the street here.

I actually feel guilty about it. I mean, I pass by somebody who has what is obviously terrific food available and for a cheap price, but I can't partake because it's loaded with carbs. They of course have no idea that I'm on this idiotic diet, so they take it as an offense; as if I don't care for their food.

Arrrgh!

I'm slowly mastering the art of drinking Tequila. This helps. Cerveza is bad for Atkin's. Tequila is good.

At some point I hope to be able to partake of all these culinary masterpieces that await me at each and every corner, but it won't be today.

To boldly go where no wig has gone before.

Sounds like you are perfecting the "Mexatkins Diet" with that concoction you whipped up. Hey, maybe you are onto something big! Perhaps you will receive some insider tips from those who have already walked down that road at attempting to diet in Mexico. Not an easy journey. Let us know how the tequila is working for you....it could well be the secret ingredient. :-)

I wonder if anyone else enjoyed the Oaxaca Fair while it was in the Plaza (and tried the grasshoppers!)

When I was being good on the low carb diet, I would get 5 or so of the small arrechera tacos at a street stand, load them up with salsa and onions and cilantro and lime and then eat them with a fork leaving the tortillas behind. It's almost the same.

and Kirk, tomatoes are not low carb and if eaten at all should be kept to a minimum. tequila is ok though.

My downfall was tamales, love them and they are pure carb.

I was just down there looking at the food and saw that there was a stand across from the cathedral, closest to the Palacio Municipal that was selling chupalines. Those are pure protein and only found here in Mazatlan while the Oaxaca show is in town.
