Coca Light--zero calories, no sugar--is available everywhere here.

Caffeine free, no. I've never seen it, not even in Mexico City or Guadalajara.

I've never seen the caffeine-free kind, either, and we used to rely on it. We just went back to regular Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi when we find it. The extra walking we do here seems to balance out the return to caffeine.

It was just put on the market in June and could be a in the marketing test stage. If it sells, I'm sure you'll see it in Mexico or if it doesn't and they have lots of inventory to get rid of, you'll have another reason to see it here, primetime, soon.

Did you mean here in Mexico it was just put into a test market? Caffeine Free Diet Coke has been on the general market in the U.S. since at least 1989, when Norma was ordered to switch to it while in CCU and she thought she'd die from Diet Coke withdrawal. Soon she was just as addicted to the caffeine-free stuff, even though it was basically colored water. She welcomed the excuse to go back to regular Diet Coke when we got to Mexico and caffeine-free was nonexistent.

If you go to the Coca-Cola homepage, they say the new Diet Coke without Caffeine is brand new. They also say that it was just introduced in June, 2005 in the USA.

I went back to the Coca-Cola homepage so I could give you a webpage as a reference but I couldn't find it. The only thing I could find was that a new Diet Coke with Splenda was released. It appears I misread something. How can that be! :-)

Here's a timeline. Caffeine free diet coke was introduced to the USA in 1983.

I also searched the Coca Cola corporate website and discovered that caffeine free diet coke is not available anywhere in Mexico. Australia, yes, and Puerto Rico--but not Mexico.

I have been drinking Diet Rite made with Splenda for a long time. It tastes to me like the Coke I grew up on in the 50's. The Diet Coke made with Splenda lacks flavor - I think. I was looking for caffeine free Coke for a friend who really misses it and I wanted to get some for a gift. Thanks for the info --I now know it is an imported item..

The Coca Cola's in Mexico are sweeter than those in the US. The Coca Light is sweeter than the diet Coke in the US. The Coca Cola's made with Splenda in the US have a very different taste than diet Coke. Coke's in Mexico were made with Cane Sugar - not corn syrup which gives an off flavor. If I drank Coke regular I would prefer cane sugar. I don't know if Mexican Cokes are made with cane sugar or corn syrup now...I prefer Diet Rite Cola which is made by Dr. Pepper-Seven Up and not available in Mexico.

The bottom line is that both Diet Coke USA and Coca Light Mexico have zero calories.

Frankly, I prefer the taste of the GV Light Cola that I buy at Wal-Mart. It also has zero calories and costs 7.9 pesos for two liters.

Somehow it makes sense that Coca Cola is a subject under the Mexican Kitchen forum in a land where the Coca Cola truck is ubiquitous. I understand that in poorer parts of rural Mexico, boys and young men use Coca Cola as a pomade. I might try that if I had actual hair.

Put in your search..Crazy things you can do with Coca Cola..and see how many uses you have besides drinking it..Being from the South I grew up on Coke as it was fondly called. We froze it in the bottle; put peanuts in it and drank it; poured it over ice cream in a punch bowl as a punch for parties; used it as the liquid when we prepared pot roast;used it in making Jello and and in making cakes and pancakes. Bubba .. you might try it on your head for a heavy growth of hair..who knows!! It will clean your battery of corrosion and cut the film and bugs from your windshield ..why not grow hair.

Cynthia:

Cok'ola or RC with Tom's Peanuts was the essential Southern dish of every Southern boy growing up in that region in the 1950s until they wuz 13 at which time they switched to Pabst Blue Ribbon and pickled pig's feet, Polish sausage, pickled hardboiled eggs and Cracklin's.

The reason Southern youngsters join the military in such large numbers is that MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) that the military serves is the first real food they ever tasted. These kids are used to pouring Karo syrup over turnip greens for dinner.

It's a Goddamned shame that the United States sends young people off to war with the promise of decent food and a safe place to sleep while the children of the rich suck off the tit of extravagence protected by the poor.

They will pay for this indecent behavior.

Bubba, you sure have a way of stringing words together to build a picture. I think it was the karo syrup on turnip greens that got me. What has me hungry though is the pickled hard boiled eggs.

Back to Coke and Mexico, my maid in the Yucatan once ranted on about how the locals lived on Coca Cola, had it for breakfast and every other meal and gave it to their kids as well. Being from Tabasco, she thought this was horrible.

As I understand it..Mexico levies a tax on drinks with high fructose corn syrup so most drinks are made with cane sugar to avoid the tax...that explains why Cokes taste like the original Cokes of the 30's.40's,50's..etc.
