Directions please - Morelia

Hi Guys and Gals, Today I'm going to be the atypical male and ask for directions. :-)

This trip is different and looks like I need some help.

Our usual Hotel in Morelia, the Hotel Mansion Aqueducto, won't take our registration without going to a bank and making a deposit. As this is the first time we've directly to Morelia from outside the country we won't be able to meet their demand. That leaves us with our usual backup reservations at the Hotel Concordia. Last time we were there we had occasion to use our backup reservations there but due to navigational difficulties, and some sort of protest downtown that was blocking all the streets, we never actually found it.

This time we're flying directly into MLM. I don't actually remember ever seeing any signs to an airport in Morelia, perhaps I wasn't paying attention. Anyway we'll be arriving late at night and picking up a rental car there. Can someone please provide me with directions to the Hotel Concordia from the airport in Morelia (MLM)?

At the car rental, pick up a Morelia map if you don't already have one.

If you are arriving late at night, it might be a better idea to take a taxi to your hotel, picking up your rental car in town the following morning.

From the airport, turn right, proceeding in a westerly direction until you hit the road to Salamanca and Morelia, just beyond the veterinary school. Take the overpass, which will put you in a southwesterly direction toward Morelia. Just past the fairground on your left, you will encounter a major intersection. Do not turn left, do not turn right, but proceed straight ahead. Keep on the same road until you pass Kentucky Fried Chicken and Blockbuster on your left and the Nocupetaro. Go straight up the hill, which will take you past Casa de la Cultura (Carmen), and about four more blocks will take you to Av. Madero. Turn right on Madero, noting the Catedral on your left, keep going, past the Hotel Virrey de Mendoza, and look for the street on which your hotel is located, about two more blocks, turning left.

I can't give you directions but I can offer advice on your hotel situation. Unfortunately, my detailed map is inaccessible due to remodeling in my home. I can tell you that once you get onto Madero (headed west), pass the cathedral and make a right on Valentin Gomez Farias. Hotel Concordia will be on your right side, one block past the sweets market.

Hotel Mansion Aqueducto, with its huge parking lot is much more preferable to Concordia. Call HMA again and ask for "Eric" (Edeek). He grew up in Chicago and speaks perfect English. Explain that you you stayed there previously and that should be enough to get you reservation. Just don't ask him what he thinks about the states or you'll get an earful.

I had a lousy experience at Concordia during my last visit and later transferred over to Hotel Virrey de Mendoza. Parking (among other things) doesn't look too pretty around there anyway.

Oh, and you need to put the accents in your sig. Ha.

I must be fortunate, because I can see accents in M.G. Rabon's "sig." I saw discussions on other forums about the lack of accents, but on my screen they were there. Whassup?

It's a technical matter - any change made to a user's "signature" (including avatar and tag-line) are automatically applied to all that user's posts, including those made previously.

I cannot quite make out if you have ever actually made the jaunt from Morelia to the airport, or vice versa. If not, you should know that it is a long way, relatively speaking, from downtown Morelia. You pass through a number of small pueblos out in the sticks.

And no trip to Morelia would be complete without a side visit to Lakeside Two. And that trip would be lacking without a yummy meal in the Restaurant Cha-Cha-Cha in Patzcuaro. At least, that is what I think.

Don Palomares (when did you become a DON?), No we haven't made the jaunt from the airport before. In the times I've been to Morelia I don't even remember seeing an airport. On my map of Morelia I don't see one either, I do see one out near Alvaro, about half way to Zinapecuaro. I assume that is MLM, and YES it does appear to be a far piece out there.

Yes, we will be spending a couple of days in Patzucaro for the lakeside2 leg of our sojourn, although currently we are actually more interested in Zuirhen (lakeside3?). Also on the agenda are are Zitacuaro, Uruapan, Zamora, Zacapu, and Ajijjc (lakeside1).

Accent police, PLEASE spare me, I know there are supposed to be accents ALL OVER THE PLACE in the above. Sorry my English keyboard doesn't do that and my arthritis is acting up enough today that all the necessary Vulcan death pinch keystrokes are out also.

Gringal, I know you to be one of our brighter lights, even tho you shun silent communication.

So, note that it is Patzcuaro with a C, not Patzquaro with a Q, which you have written more than once, so it is not a typo.

We want your kind and good observations showing up when folks do a forum search for Patzcauro. Do not care for Lakeside Two, eh? Well, we need a few more Gringos here, but not too many, and the pure Patzcuaro has not done the trick. Tho, it should because it has a beautiful ring to it that Lakeside of any number lacks.

While we are on a spelling jag, for you outsiders, it is Zirahuen, and it is a nicer lake, cleanliness-wise. Smaller, no islands, tho, that I know of. Never seen one. It is very close, about 15 miles, to Lake Patzcuaro, so we will now include it in Lakeside Two (Lakesides Two?)

Yes, Jennifer's otherwise excellent directions failed to note that after hanging that right out of the airport you drive and drive and drive and drive. Topes, pueblitos, perritos, etc. Her taxi recommendation is a good one.

And, yes, I am a Don now. The new forum makeup pleased me so greatly that I decided to make myself sound more elegant.

However, I am considering a step up to emperor-hood. The jury is still out on that.

Surely you don't want to attract the kind of folks who can't enjoy rolling that around their tongues? Yawn, snort.

Then there's the nearby hamlet with the great views and the ruins: you know, the one that sounds like "sin soon, son". Your town has undeniable charms. Just a tad tooooo quiet, but your pitches should change that shortly. First will come the artists in search of cheap digs; then the hangers-on who love to be around art and wear pointy beards and berets; then the teahouse/galleries and finally -TA-DUM - the People. I'll plan to have my birthday lunch for 2025 in one of the four star restaurants on the square.

No Mr. Palomares. You are not a Don. It is obvious that you have no understanding of the honorary title of Don. It is not a title bestowed by any government, or university, except Oxford and Cambridge.

It is a Spanish title of a nobleman, or a person of consequence. It is a title that people that admire your lifetime accomplishments may address you with. It is not something that you can append to yourself, use in a signature, letterhead, business card, etc.

There are, as far as I know, no laws regulating the use of the title, but if you attach it to yourself, you will pay the penalty of ridicule as someone ignorant of the accepted conventions concerning that title of respect.

After you have been in Mexico a little longer, you will learn more about the social norms in this society.

When I first met my wife’s family a few decades ago, they all addressed me as “Don Rex”. That was just politeness. Now it is either ”oye”, or “Tio Rex”.

Don Rex! Normally Don is applied to a first name, like Don Rex. So, Don Palomares would be incorrect on that level because Palomares is a last name. My lovely wife's, actually. So, there is an error I am commiting that I own up to. However, it has a nice sound, don't you think? I certainly do.

True, it is a Spanish honorific that one normally does not bestow on oneself. But we live in a postmodern world, and all the rules are out the window, according to a broad spectrum of the intelligentsia. I heartily disagree, but I will take advantage of them at this moment.

Anyway, here in my humble pueblo of Tzurumutaro, I am indeed a person of consequence (there is scant competition), so I am taking the liberty of bestowing the word upon myself. So there.

But to justify my doing so to you, I will note that the very first person to call me Don Palomares on this forum was the Rose of Morelia!

Around here, she is an arm of the government.

So, there you have it. I have been officially Don'd.

Anyway, as I mentioned in another spot, I am seriously considering elevating myself to emperorship, as already has happened on another (more civilized) Mexico forum. My apologies to The Rose.

And, no, ABQ, Don is not my first name. It is my partially self-bestowed honorific. Don Rex is right. I done it to myself.
