water filtration systems

I will be renovating an adobe house in Patzcuaro and would appreciate any information on water filtration systems. How much do they actually filter, general cost, etc.
Many thanks.

A belated answer, but I just started looking at this forum. We had heard about the silver colloidal pellet system, but were concerned about possible negative health effects. The Big Bottle system had little appeal. Those things are seriously heavy to handle. A year ago we bought two "Filtroplas" systems from Home Depot. One went on the kitchen sink and the other on the master bedroom sink upstairs. No plumber is needed. They have a separate faucet and there is a switch attached to the regular faucet so that you have a choice between filtered/unfiltered water. They are about the size of a paper towell roll; are not unattractive and are easy to use. They cost about $50 each; extra filters about $5. It's recommended that filters be changed every 6 mo. with average use. Proof of usefulness: the water tastes good and we haven't been sick yet. They are also available at other large hardware stores, and are made by the Rotoplas, the company that makes the large rooftop water tanks. Literature is available.

As I have mentioned several times in the past, the only way to know for sure, whether your water is contaminated or not, is to have the water tested by a lab. Then and only then will you know what you have. If you do get your water tested, I'd be interested in knowing the results.

Good point. We suffer from that human ailment called procrastination. It affects the getup and go systems, but we really do need to get the water tested.

We have a Filtroplas on the inlet side of our tinaco, but for drinking water in the kitchen we have a 'Turmix'. This is a ceramic cartridge system intended for heavy commercial use but they do make one smaller version for residential use. The cartridge is washed every 2-3 weeks and replaced every 2 years. This gives water good enough for drinking and cooking - although I still prefer to give our baby daughter the agua de garrafon for her juices and milk.
