There are two roads that connect SMA to Guanajuato city. Neither one is numbered in my latest edition of Guia Roji. The more common route takes your across the desert and can be driven in about an hour, mas o menos. The second route goes the Northern appproach through Dolores Hidalgo and then through some beautiful mountain scenery. That will take much longer, but is a nice drive.

Thanks. I remembered we had done it two ways - one really scary and the other not but I couldn't remember if we took the mountainous hairpin turn road because it was shorter or not. Sounds like quick through the desert will be our choice!

If you go the mountain route you can stop at Santa Rosa for lunch, several excellent restaurants and a hotel. That's the route the tour offered by the Instituto takes and it is indeed beautiful. Our bus driver had no problems with the curves and heights, but I wouldn't drive it myself.

In rainy season, the shorter route is better/safer--and even then it is better to travel in the morning when serious rains are less likely.

On a slightly different twist, I have reserved the Viajes San Miguel shuttle from Leon airport to SMA but my flight doesn't arrive until 9:15pm. They have confirmed the reservation. Should I be concerned about taking this shuttle trip at night? Thanks.

Don't worry, jeana. They have been in business for a long time and, in fact, your flight time is routine for them. You won't be getting into SMA until around 11PM so it is more important that your arrangements here in town be firmed up.
