Bringing equipment into Mexico for home repair and back to US

1st. time user and "Newcomers". My wife and I are going to get a place in San Blas that has been gutted by Hurricane Kenna and needs to be rebuilt basically. Our question is can we bring stuff like welder, pressure washer, air compressor, generator, etc. into Mexico temporarily until the rehab is completed and then return it to the US. What about the import duties if it is not to remain in Mexico? As a retired firefighter on limited budget we are trying to keep cost down. Thanks for any input or assistance you can offer.

You can try to convince the customs guy of your plans if your Spanish is good enough, but I doubt that it will work. You will probably have to pay a duty of about 17% of the value of the equipment. The value is not the resale or replacement value, but what you could reasonably expect to sell it for. You should have a list of items with your valuation of each item.

Coming back to the States with the equipment is not a problem.

Good luck.
