Bagel shops?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Are there any bagel shops in Guad or Lakeside? We have a New York bagel shop in my neighborhood that I am going to miss very much when we move down here. I may be forced to make my own which I have never done before- any comments about where to go? Anybody ever try to make their own?

Mary Ann:

I am not a big bagel fan but here is an idea for you. When you first get here, you will think the information regarding where to shop or eat or find theatre to be deficient. You can overcome this and here is where I suggest you start.

Buy Friday's MURAL, PUBLICO and EL INFORMADOR Guadalajara newspapers and you will find weekend supplements giving you information on local restaurants in Greater Guadalajara. For example, the Friday edition of MURAL includes the magazine PRIMERA FILA AND PUBLICO has the famous OCIO.

These publications will give you a breakdown of ethnic restaurants in Guadalajara from Greek to Chinese to Japanese, etc. - you name it; and you will find this entertaining.

Bubba- have you ever had a fresh- just out of the oven bagel? I'm not talking about the little frozen ones by Sara lee or Lenders. My favorite is the ET bagel (stands for everything). I don't care for sweet bagels- give me garlic or onion or even the jalapeno bagel is good. Slice it and spread with cream cheese, then add a slice of home-grown tomato sprinkled with coarse salt, a piece of smoked salmon, a slice of red onion, then topped off with capers! This is "died and gone to heaven" food!
Thanks for the info on the newspapers and magazines- I subscribe to the Chapala Review to keep up with what's happening Lakeside.

Sam's club carries a bunch of bagels. Cooked fresh almost daily and with a good price.

Costco also sells bagels, two packages of six of assorted flavors, cheese or onion or sesame or plain, for something like $4 US. They're huge bagels, and a bit more tender than a good old NY bagel, but they do in a pinch. And Costco has the cream cheese and smoked salmon there, too, plus a lower cost creamed cheese and salmon mixture good for a schmear.

In San Miguel the Bagel Cafe and several other restaurants have bagels on the menu, but none of them compare to a genuine NY special. I've tried making them and if I recall, they have to be boiled before they are baked, and the high altitudes of much of Mexico are not conducive to perfect bagels. It couldn't be my ineptitude in baking.

At Sam's Club, here in Mazatlan, they are cooked and ready to go.

I've made bagels from scratch a time or two. They're a pain in the neck, IMHO. You do indeed have to boil them before you bake them.

There's nothing resembling a NY bagel to be had in Guadalajara or at Lake Chapala. Those big fluffy things from either Sam's or Costco will do, as Carol said, in a pinch--but if you're hankering for the real deal, forget it.

You know, I'm thinking you could do almost the same thing (cream cheese, tomato, salt, smoked salmon, capers) on a split bolillo, or possibly a telera. Clearly wouldn't be quite the same, but it might be good enough to satisfy the itch. Crust would probably be a little too crunchy and the innards maybe not quite chewy enough, but it might get close.

Thank you everyone for your responses- I'll have to make bagels something to bring down when we visit stateside. We are originally from Wisconsin and we have anyone from up north to bring us cheese curds when they come to TX!! Why they are only available up north I don't know. If anyone down there is from WI you will know what I mean about missing chesse curds (AKA squeeky cheese ) I'll just make a list once I'm down there. What else does anyone miss that you can't find in Lakeside? I already know about Hebrew National hot dogs!

When you first move to Mexico, your cravings for things you left behind will surface from time to time. But, over the years, I'm sure they'll cease and in their place you'll find something here that will fill the void.

We go out to a little village once in a while to get out of the city and to experience the life without city noise. There really is a difference. While out there, Kathryn was taught to make some gourmet tortillas over a wood fire. Unfortunately, I wasn't invited to learn as it's a 'woman' thing out in the sticks. They were incredible and have taken over that space we had for a freshly baked loaf of pan integral. Plus, we can make just enough for one meal insuring freshness every time.
