cheap calls to the states

I came across a service that seems to be too good to be true. I learned about it from Jean who wrote about this in the general forum on July 4th. I have been calling the US and Canada for about 3.2 cents US or 4 cents Canadian per minute, not over the internet, but via any phone I have access to here in Mexico.

Samsung is offering 1000 minute calling cards for $350 pesos that work from any phone in Mexico to the US and Canada. All one does is call the 001-800 written on the calling card one purchases for this $350 pesos, wait for a recorded message, press one and then wait until prompted to enter the calling card Pin #, and the area code and # you want to call and wait for the person at the other end to answer the phone. It that's simple.

Has anyone else had any good or bad experience with these cheap Samsung calling cards? I've been having great luck. Everything seems to be working. It's just that the rates are so low, there has to be a catch, and I can't find one. By the way, these calling cards should be available in Ajijic Monday at Lagunanet the local ISP. If you are interested, give them a ring at 766-0297 after 9AM weekdays.

Do these cards have any time limit on them, do you know? Do they expire in a year if not used? They sound really good - almost worth forgetting about Vonage for that kind of price, unless one spends an inordinate amount of time on the phone to the north.

The nice thing about Vonage or similar systems is that you can receive calls and that you have voice-mail. The folks up north who call your Vonage number will only be charged according to your US area code. It's hard to beat.

The 1000 minute cards have a 6 month expiration period. Yep the cards are really great for calling north but do not offer a virtual number for your friends up north to call (you) like Vonage and packet8 do.

The cards are available for sale in Ajijic, so I bet they are or will be in other locations soon.

Yes, especially if you can nab as your phone number the area code and exchange that contains the person you talk to the most. Then it's outright scary how cheap it is for them to call you... it's a local call... in most places that isn't metered. It works out to being close to free.

I just wish they supported Hawaiian numbers. I have a brother in Hawaii and it would be great to be able to talk to him for next to nothing.

I won't mention what the Telmex bill was for an hour phone call there. Let's just say it's many expletives.
