Lost Passport and FM3

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm at the acceptance stage. My passport and FM3 are gone. I only keep them in two places--a file in my office and in my car when I drive. I'm pretty sure they were stolen from my car. I don't have power door locks and I was assuming my passengers would lock when they exit the car. Several times they didn't. Now I know, but it's to late to salvage my papers.

I'm leaving via plane to ABQ this thursday. My FM3 expires in August. I do have a birth certificate and drivers license. Any advice?

Report the theft immediately to both your local Migracion office and the closest US consulate. This is something they need to know. But, yes, your birth certificate and picture ID will get you out of Mexico with no problems. However, you may need to get a letter from Migracion explaining the situation in case you are stopped in Mexico on your way back to the border and asked for a visa.

Albuquerque,

Carron has given you good advice. I’ve known a number of people who ended up here without papers and they had no problem getting out of the country (Back into the U.S.). But that may be becoming more difficult.

Now, your car could be an issue. I don’t know, does anyone else? You still have the auto import papers - right?

Thank you for sharing this with us. It gives us a “Heads up” to carry copies of our documents and to keep the originals secure.

Also, for those of us who live here year round, it’s a good idea to register with your consulate so that they have copies of our documents. Granted that I gave my consulate more info than they wanted, but it was all stapled neatly and filed.

ABQ, thanks again for the “Heads up”.

Yes, I have the car inport papers. I only kept copies in the car as I should have done with the others.

I just left from the consulate. They said fine for leaving the country, just to give extra time at the airport. Unfortunatly, that is not possible as I have a closing right before I leave for the airport. I'll try to get a letter from e Mexican immigration that will clear me through.
