Internet Long Distance Services

This has been discussed before but I am hoping somone's current experience may help me.

We have used IConnectHere.com for about a year to call the U.S. and Europe and, at first were quite pleased with the service but recently have found it unuseable because of constant break-ups in our conversations. We consulted with the company and their consultants suggested a number of remedial actions which we took without success. We have now reverted to our call back service which works fine but we are talking about $0.27US per minute vs. $0.05 per minute to Europe on the internet. That's a hunk of change.

There has been talk here that Telmex is purposely sabotaging VOIP services but they deny it.

Has anyone had recent experience with VOIP services they could share with us including your current experience with IConnectHere.Com?

I have heard that some have also had problems with VONAGE.

Vonage in Mazatlan works great. I know several people who use it. You have to have high speed cable to make it work. I know people were having trouble with ANY voip system using Telmex but I've also heard that the problem was fixed. My experience is with Vonage and Megacable. No problem.

We are using Vonage for long distance both in the US and Mexico, but I do have to admit that there are "break up" problems in both places. It is not an ideal solution. Some calls have no problems at all and others break up at the most inconvenient points in the conversation

There were reported problems in Mazatlan and Baja California and much finger pointing at Telmex. I read enough stuff to make me believe that Telmex was indeed, at the very minimum, helping the problem. Carlos Slim is not going to give up without a fight! But - we have the same problems NOB - our upload speeds must be dropping.

I'm still using Iconnecthere with enormous success. However, use Megared high speed cable as my ISP, which may be the difference between my mileage and your mileage. Y'all country mice Bubbas ought to move to the city.

About a week ago Iconnecthere had some weirdness, crackle and echo and downtime, but it's back to its normal wonderfulness now.

The cable television company in San Miguel de Allende has just this week made an announcement that it would soon offer VOIP services to its customers at, purportedly, a savings of up to 60% off their current long distance and local calling plans. No further details are available but, given the players named in the deal, it would appear to be VoxIP. Check out this link for information and availability in your area. It's not as good a deal financially as Vonage but at least one can get local support (like Telmex, lol). http://www.voxip.com.mx/

At first blush,, as you suggested, Brian, the rates offered by these folks (http://www.voxip.com.mx/) for long distance phone calls to the states, seems too high, between $1.00 and $1.30 pesos per minute, for example which is a lot higher than that offered by other VoIP companies.

I used to always have good luck with iconnecthere Esperanza. I've had some problems this spring on one of the two ISPs I use. When I get back to Ajijic (9 days) I shall test my VoIP connections on my backup ISP. (infinitum, the slowest connection; 512 over 128 which usually tests at about 410 over 65 kb/sec)

I've heard the same rumor about Telmex possibly making it a wee bit difficult to have a successful VOIP experience. If you aren't already doing so, I suggest getting your high speed internet service from a non-Telmex affiliated cable complany and then hooking up to a service like Vonage. When I first did this, there were some breakup problems with 800 numbers in the U.S., but after I complained about it, they set up a "ping" text on my line and I haven't had any more problems.

No personal grudge against Telmex, of course. These are the people who have a line to call when you have phone problems. No human on the other end: just leave a message. No one will call you back. Someday your phone service may return. What's not to like?
