Scorpions

Hi Everyone,
Just out of curiosity, what's the scorpion situation in Maz. I'm not afraid of them. Was bitten by a black King Scorpion in India when I was 14. got really ill, but am still here. Just wondering about the scorpion population in Maz.

I don't think we have a problem here with scorpions, at least I haven't noticed one.

I'm not sure I'd call it a scorpion problem but they exist here for sure. In fact, we have had about at least three in our apartment. One morning Kathryn screamed from the bathroom and lo and behold, there was a scorpion that was almost as big as a Mazatlan langostina. I have a neighbor who was bitten but she wasn't anywhere near death afterwards. See attached photo.

Geez, Steve, now I'm gonna have nightmares of those things.

And it's the stinger on the tip of the tail that does the deal--they don't actually bite.

YIKES ESTEBAN!!!!!!! That was even bigger than the one that stung me.....
Oh God, now I'm going to have nightmares also. What area do you live in? It's like the guy before a scary movie says, "Be afraid! Be very afraid." And now I'll probably turn chicken, clucking and all.
SHIVVVVVVVER!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone has their favorite area but in my opinion, we live in the nicest and most exclusive
areas of Mazatlan(Cerro de Vigia). It's older and there aren't many, if any, homes for sale. We do have a vacant lot next door so that probably has something to do with the scorpion problem. We also have several wild iguanas, lots of birds, a few snakes and ant colonies.

And the purpose of posting this picture was what exactly?

The whole critter situation here is getting out of hand. I was kind of enjoying those really huge spiders we get, until I see one on the kitchen counter, clutching something under it's belly. I'm thinking it's a five peso coin, that in addition to the kleptoparasite Magnificent Frigatebirds (which are really huge too) we have huge spiders running around through a person's stuff looking for money.

I flip it over, and it turns out it's an egg sac! And it must've thought I was going to kill it, cause right then and there, on my kitchen counter, out pour what couldn't have been no less than a thousand little baby spiders, all scooting for their own little nook and cranny in my kitchen... within fifteen seconds they were all gone.

So basically, next year I'm going to have hundreds of these things running around in my apartment.

At least I was wrong about it stealing my money. But still.

Do scorpions eat spiders? I don't think anything else here will. The spiders seem to be at the top of the food chain. The geckoes are afraid of them, and the iguanas are too lazy to be bothered.

To boldly go where no wig has gone before.

Hi there - You're SURE you want to move to Maz? Two reasons we didn't: (1) giant bugs and (2) IMMENSE BUGS.
It is beautiful over there on the coast, though.

Be serious, you are freaking Alison out now! I have lived here 5 years and not been pestered with anything much at all except perhaps mice and ticks (my dog, not me). I remember those being not unique to Mexico...LOL. There are the "miracle grow" sized spiders, which I have seen once in a blue moon (the ones that Kirkswig describes), and cockroaches which live in all the tropics. I looked at Estebans attachment of the scorpion and can say that I have NEVER seen one of those in my life-time. Maybe I lead a sheltered life....

Well, golly gee, I'm sorry if I did that. But that's what everybody told me that freaked me out back when. I really do have a thing about big bugs. Eeeek.

Aha! You have to be very extra careful to consider the motives of those who give advice these days. LOL ! I have heard MANY horror stories about the scorpions and spiders (and worms in the palapas????) in Lake Chapala/Ajijic areas from people who have moved here - to get away from those critters. I see one or two big black spiders a year here at the most....Go figure.

Thanks Marlene. Ok guys and gals, the joke's probably on me. :-) Scorpions don't bother me at all even A FOOT LONG ONE, but spiders are a different story. Well even if there are BIG one's, my knight in shining armor, my Ed will take care of the nasties. and I'll take care of the mice as he does not like them. You all have not seen a spider until you've seen an Australian Wolf spider which can get as big as a dinner plate. They used to hang on our back fence and Ed would hose them into the neighbor's yard. Neighbor didn't mind. He collected the venom.
All the same ... YIKES & YUCK & EEEK
