Hi Marlene,
I took your advice and became a member of this website. In my personal email to you a few days ago, I metioned to you that Ed and I were going to retire in Mazatlan and that my cousin was going to buy a house. Anyway, I have done so much research with such conflicting opinions from people who live in Mexico, that I am more confused than ever, so, could you or anyone else living in Mazatlan, give me any of the following info?
Most reliable Real Estate Agent. You Marlene? I hear so many good things about you.
Which area to buy which would be among other Americans and foreigners. Area where one can have TV, phone and Internet access?
We are not 'rich and famous' just an average couple who don't have a 'Big Budget,' or a large bank account. Just a normal friendly couple who want to live life comfortably in Paradise.
Would you and anyone else please help with advice and answers? You may even email me personally. Will greatly appreciate it. I envy you guys. You're sitting there in sunshine, while I'm looking at dark clouds and rain. Regards, Alison

Welcome Alison! I am glad you decided to join Mexconnect. There is fabulous reading about Mexico here in our E-magazine and as well we have the best experts on Mexico right here under the Mexconnect roof. Ask anything about Mexico you wish on the General or Living, Working, Retiring forum or even the Tec or Kitchen forums and you will receive no shortage of answers. There are quite a few Mazatlecos lurking on Mexconnect too and I know they will be pleased to chime in with their own experiences unique to Mazatlan.

Actually, I am not a realtor (darn it! - I would be off sailing on my own yacht this afternoon if I was..hehehe) but rest assured we have a few very good and knowledgeable realtors amongst us. My recommendation to you would be to come to Mazatlan and spend some time making your way around. Don't bite off too many bit chunks in advance, as it will be overwhelming. Mazatlan is very civilized and while we have no particular foreign enclaves, you will find us living in a wide variety of areas....areas that appeal to us personally. Lots and lots of choices in various price ranges.

Many are smitten with the el Centro Historico/Olas Altas area which is booming right now with restoration projects, beautiful old abandoned mansions being restored to true glory. Many other foreigners are buying lots and condos in the new La Marina area or Cerritos beach area or somewhere in between. The great part is that Mazatlan is spread out along some 21 kms. of beautiful beaches and none of the residential areas we as foreigners choose to live are very far from the ocean. You simply need to familiarize yourself with the various areas and see what feels good to you. That is something that someone else can't tell you. You are on the right track already though, for you have chosen Mazatlán!

Marlene.

Hi Marlene,
Once again, thank you for your reply and sound advice. I'll do just that. What is the name of the nightclub/restaurant that your husband plays at? Would like to go hear him when we come down in oct.
Regards,
Alison.

His band, La Grilla, plays at Mr. Tony's in the Golden Zone, Thursdays through Sundays. Tony's is an outdoor Palapa style restaurant/bar where you can watch the world go by and where everybody who is anybody drives by at least 50 times a night on weekends! It's a local thing.

Thanks Marlene, we'll make sure we go there, Colleen and I. Perhaps I'll be fortunate enough to meet up with you. We'll probably try to stay at Hotel la Playa if it's reasonable enough. We will be there around early October.

Hotel Playa is a wonderful choice for a stay in Mazatlán. It is a timeless hotel property that is beautifully maintained and has the famous Fiesta Mazatlan on an ongoing basis. Walking distance to almost everything. You will be only a two minute walk from Tony's.
