A relatively easy journey for about 65% of the route. Reynosa to Tampico, allow 6 hours. Tampico to Poza Rica about 3 hours. Ed & Fran Murphy in Tuxpan (or Roy in Xalapa) can give the best route south to Xalapa, I am sure, with an idea of how long it might take.

From McAllen, cross on the Reynosa-Hidalgo bridge, follow the signs for Franciso Villa and Cd.Victoria. The route out of Reynosa can be tricky - if you pass the Pharr International Bridge (with a big LG plant on the right) then you have missed the turning to Francisco.

Take Route 97 south - a dead straight road that has recently been upgraded to 2 lanes in each direction.

At Route 101, turn right - signposted Cd. Victoria & Tampico...here you have a choice.

1) Route 101 to Cd.Victoria then Route 81 to Tampico is a good, fast, easy road that is safe at night. The whole length is now 2 lanes in each direction and there is only one tricky junction near Victoria when changing from the 101 to the 81.

2) The alternative is the single lane Route 180 via Soto La Marina and Aldama - this is a rural route that the buses use. It is twisty, busy, slow and not safe at night due to animals on the road. It is more 'colorful' but also more frustrating.

In Tampico, follow the signs for Route 180 to Tuxpan and cross the Puente de Tampico - this is a toll bridge and costs MN$27 each way. Take Route 180 south to El Alazan then Route 127 to Poza Rica. From Poza Rica, the route looks complex in my Guia Roji so this is where Ed & Fran can help!

Suggest you break the journey in Tampico and set off for Xalapa early in the morning.

Good luck

Adrian
