Now a clothing catalog uses SMA as a marketing tool

A friend in Washington just sent me this link. A 10-store clothing chain, "The Territory Ahead," has photos of San Miguel illustrating its summer catalog. The cover has a photo of the corner of Aldama and Cuadrante with a blurb, "Without a map or guidebook, you can easily get lost exploring San Miguel de Allende--and that's the whole point. The colors, textures, architectural details, and floral motifs create an exhilerating first impression as you wander down one quaint cobblestone street after another. Our catalog celebrates this spirit, and no other season encourages it with such energy. You'll see it in the colors of our print shirts, feel it in the lightness of our cotton shorts and the open-air freedom of our sandals and shoes. Like getting lost in San Miguel for the first time, we hope to exceed your expectations." Now we're a marketing tool for sandals that can get you killed if you actually wear them on the cobblestones. Here's the link to the catalog. http://www.territoryahead.com/...8GDKGJU0M4KDWKFL0TQ8 Carol Schmidt

Dear Carol,

I don’t fully understand the nature of your post (?). Are developments such as these something that you are happy with; are ‘proud’ of, and/or even wanting more of?

Or is this a thoughtfully courteous, ‘heads-up’ warning to your local neighbors that such developments point to the (rather dangerous) fact that SMA may well be on it‘s way to “evolving” the path of such questionable routes as the northern, ‘New Vallarta’, or (God Forbid) such disturbing trends 'reflected' in Lake Chapala?

If the later, then Gracias, Hermana, Y Paz2U. Viva Mexico……….!

We at Lake Chapala are very pleased with any good publicity the San Miguel area gets that will induce future expats to choose your area over ours. For those contemplating coming down to Mexico, Nuevo Vallarta is also a much better destination than the ratty Lake Chapala area which is full of ex-military guys sitting around playing checkers and drinking Jim Beam all day long.

It certainly isn't my area, Bubba, as my "Strange Indeed" post below so clearly describes!

But nonetheless, that's a really funny post, amigo (as I am sure you're right!).

Vaya con Dios, siempre! (Y Feliz Pascua!).

None of the above, it's just one more interesting development in the ongoing struggle between developers and protectors and exploiters and publicists, common to every desirable location in the world.

It's a favorite pastime in SMA as it was in LA and Phoenix and Sedona and Santa Fe and Anchorage and Chapel Hill and Victoria and Vancouver and thousands of other places I either lived in or spent a little time in while I was a full-time RVer for 3 1/2 years, searching for my own retirement paradise.

A friend who first hit SMA in the 1960s said she was told back then that she should have come to SMA in the '50s when it was really great, before all the newcomers spoiled it! Change is inevitable, and not always knee-jerk bad.

Thet have some nice things and I'm thinking or ordering from them. Do you think the duty would be too bad?

Duty on imported clothing is fairly high, and from what I saw their clothes looked overpriced, at least for my budget. Basic khakis for $70 US? I'd rather pay $25 to a local store for basic cotton slacks. Or dig through the bargain tables at Tuesday Market. Or have Norma sew me a pair. Anyone know exactly what the duty rate is on imported new clothes? I'm thinking 17-23% but I have no idea where I came up with those figures.

Lucky you! I'm 5'10" and wouldn't have a chance of finding clothes that fit at the market. More expensive clothing is usually cut a little different for a better fit. I decided on Eddie Bauer (tall) I'll post the duty charge when I get the bill.

There have been at least 2 national catalogs a year for the last 12 or more years. Everything in centro plus Atotonilco have been photographed- complete with models, burros, baloon men, flower ladies, etc. Harolds of Texas, Horchow, Niemans, Coldwater Creek etc. I started saving them but there are so many of them I don't anymore. I will have to say it photographs beautifully. The light is equal - they say- to the south of France and the thermal water is the same as Baden Baden. No wonder people flock here.
