wireless internet and voip

Is wireless internet always satellite, meaning that for broadband VoIP, there would always be latency and therefore DSL would be preferable?

Thanks for your help.

Huh? NO Wireless internet is almost never satellite in our kneck of the woods. Have you ever been to Starbucks and seen all the folks with laptops connected to the internet? That's what most people think about when the say wireless. With fixed WiFi many folks use antennas and extend the distance to perhaps 5 to 10 miles from the ISP.

"No wireless internet is almost never satellite" = All wireless internet in Mexico is through satellite?

We have to choose between DSL/Telmex Infinitum and a wireless internet service provider. As this is mainly for overseas telephoning and not internet, we don't want any lags because of the satellite. Maybe if my probem is clearer, you would be able to advise me... Thank you.

Let me try explaining this again. The reason satellite internet connectivity sucks is because the geostationary satellite is 22,300 miles above the equator and signals travelling at 186,000 miles per second takes a long time to travel to and from the satellite.

Here on earth the distance the signal has to travel between your house and the ISP, be it over a telephone line or over the air when you are conntected via a 802.11b wireless WiFi service is much much shorter, maybe a mile or three. In both cases the signal travels at 186,000 miles per second. In both cases the distance is so short that you will not notice any delay.

Is DSL better than Wireless for VoIP? That depends upon who you talk to. Some like Prodigy best, others like the wireless competition.

Neither service is perfect. VoIP quality is deteriorating lakeside. Remember VoIP is illegal. Remember that Prodigy is owned by the telephone company.Remember that the more folks who use VoIP over Prodigy which is owned by the telephone company, the less money the telephone company makes.

The telephone company, therefore Prodigy, is not motivated to provide you service that allows you to break Mexican laws and find alternative ways to make phone calls.

I WAS CORRECTED on another forum. VoIP is not illegal if one gets permission or is licensed to use it in Mexico. It's just that the names of those VoIP companies I see offered like Vonage, Packet8 do not sound anything like the below companies that apparently are authorized to use VoIP in Mexico. Those companies authorized are apparently "Alestra, Avantel, Bestcable, Bestphone, Conexxion XXI, Maxcom, Megacable, Mexico Network Communications, Protel, Network of Services of Telecommunications, Stratel, Telmex, Telnor, National Telephone Union, VPN of Mexico, Axtel, Iusacell, Services of Wireless Access, Telcel, Telephone Moving bodies, and Unefón Thanks SPARKS for the information

Bobby, What Pete said was you are very unlikely to find satellite service anywhere in Mexico.

Recently, at the Santa Fe mall here in Mexico City I saw a group advertising VoIP services. They had a stand set up, but it was not one of the companies previously mentioned.

Dear Rolly and Johanson,

New question. The fellows with wireless internet have said that there are about 8 miles between our house and the tower and therefore we'll need an amplifier (we're across from an island where the tower is). What do you think? Will there be the same quality as for those not needing an amplifer? Thanks!

Bobby

Where are you located? It all depends on the environment and the equipment. Are we talking point to point? How many dB are the antennas etc.

You are asking very technical questions that perhaps could be best answered by the ISP providing that service.

8 miles will work under the right conditions, but often not. It depends on the environment, the type of equipment etc

Thanks very much for your comments and help.

I recently talked to a friend who said that, at least for Paris, one should wait six months until a new security standard will be integrated into wireless (including wireless internet), and that until then, it should be excluded for security reasons.
