Are there many hacienda style houses on the coast, or is construciton on the Yucatan coast another style? Are there many haciendas still preserved on the coast?

Virtually all of the old "Haciendas" are located in what is now the State of Yucatan. Check with a search engine like http://www.google.com/...p;q=hacienda+yucatan

Along the coast of Quintana Roo, architecture is diverse and creative!

If by "on the coast" you mean literally "on the coast", I am not aware of any haciendas that are directly "on the water" so to speak. The Haciendas that Jim gave the URL to are all inland, and were henequen plantations before the fall of that product being used in the making of rope. We visited the Merida area for a month in January and visited several restored ones that range from museums, to elegant hotels to B & B ones. They all are 'not to be missed'.
