Ok, now I'm confused. I am a non - non techie who likes to just press a buttom and have everything work. All this talk about the phone/computor services has passes me up. I will be coming down for 6 mo.s (Ajijic/Chapala) with a Dell (3 GHZ, 512 MB, 40 GB) laptop. It's main purpose will be for a lot of word processing, but I will need to use the internet to communicate with my family as well as keep intouch with a business market. It is not hooked up for wireless. Is there anything I should buy NOB that I will need SOB to get good internet service. I will probably hook it up to my phone at a rental for 6 mo's. Are the internet cafe' adequate for printing or hooking up to the internet for downloading? What is your advice for a ISP, phone connection, wireless, DSL, etc.? I know it is a big question from a stupid person...so keep it simple.
Just me...eek!

EEK you are facing the same problem all of the snowbirds face when they (we) come down each year. If all you want is dialup then you have two choices around the Ajijic-Chapala area. And either, Lagunanet or Prodigy is OK. I said OK not fantastic.

Why only OK? Not because of the quality of the servers or modems each ISP has, but because of the difference of the quality of the telephone line connections and the location of the telephone # you call to get on line.

That said some people believe they have received bad service from one or the other, and terribly badmouth that ISP. Usually, but not always, the problem was not that of the ISPs but that of a fellow senior citizen who would rather get angry at someone else than admit he is the one who screwed up.

And yes many internet cafes can meet all of the needs you mentioned below. I think the most sophisticated internet cafe is in the CIA coffee shop here in Ajijic. The internet cafe is easy to find, it's across the street from the telephone company and is in the building with all of the high antennas on it. And the station master Harry has great food. He speaks fluent English, Spanish, and Persian. You can either use his computers or connect your laptop to the internet via Ethernet or 802,11b. He's located on the first floor on west side of the building

Oh, the CIA doesn't stand for the Central Intelligence Agency, rather it stands for the Cafe Internet Ajijic and the antennas on the roof belong to Lagunanet, an ISP, not the US Government.

Johanson, thanks for the quick reply. You always give good info and now I feel at ease. Not all the way at ease ... I was worried about learning Spanish, now I see that Harry speaks English, Spanish, and Persian, so off I go learning Persian. Oh well, c'est la vie.
