Malecón Reloaded

It looks like they are about to put the wraps on the new Malecón, to the great pleasure (and relief) of everyone in town.

It's a lot wider (hurray!), with more benches (hurray!) and garbage cans (hurray!), and is a lot prettier too (though it still faces tough competition from the Pacific.)

And as an added bonus, they just put up some new statues to give the naked couple at the Fisherman's Monument some company, adding a splash of color and introducing a new aesthetic sensibility. The jury may be out on these statues judging from some of the reactions I've seen. Personally, I like them well enough, but I think come summer we're going to see these statues succomb to the mighty winds generated by some of the storms we get here.

I think I can safely speak for everyone when expressing my relief over this project being completed. During most of the construction one of two very important southbound lanes was blocked, making the trip to Centro from the Golden Zone not as pleasant as it should be. Even pedestrians had a hard time of it, as the construction areas were not exactly easy to traverse (and not a little bit dangerous too), though why one wouldn't want to take off the sandals and do your walking on the beach is beyond me.

Isn't it beautiful? Now that it is near completion, I think it was money well spent. The tourists and local families alike are out in droves from sunrise to sunset enjoying the new malecon along the ocean.

Those big tall interesting statue figures along the malecon are only for Carnaval and the Baseball playoffs I do believe. The Carnaval theme this year is music, but because the Caribbean series playoffs at the same time they threw in a large baseball player. How tall are they anyway - 15 feet or more? It took a rather large crew to move and install each one of them.

Are you ready for your first Carnaval in Mazatlán? Your rooftop is one of the premier spots for the Saturday night "navel battle" fireworks display. Enjoy!

If they're really having a battle of navels I'm coming over there. Of course, a lot will depend on whose navels will be battling. I wouldn't mind seeing J. Lo's, and Gloria Estéfan's would be good, and probably Luís Miguel's, and maybe I'd even go for Vicente's--Fox, not Fernández.

On the other hand, if it's a naval battle...I'll stay right here at home.

Thanks for the laugh, Marlene. ;^)

Ha ha! Come on over and we'll sort that out (or would that be in)!

Here is the official website for 2005 Carnaval

http://www.carnavalmazatlan.com.mx/inicio_en.php

Click on the Program tab and scroll down to Feb 5th...definitely looks like Naval Battle! (Vicente's navel....yikes!)

Ready as I'll ever be, though I'm not entirely certain what to expect, what to do, where to go, etc. (My rooftop is easy enough, but otherwise...)

As for navel battles (lol), I thought that's what sumo wrestling was all about. Two more-than-fully grown men competing to see who can give the other the maximum wedgie.

I'm glad it was a typo.

As far as what to expect during the height of Carnaval other than lots of noise and all night bands in the Olas Altas area, advice that bears repeating is to leave valuables at home and carry minimal cash. We get a few pick-pockets visiting us during this special time so please be careful.
