bus trip for practicing Spanish

Can't Post | Private Reply
I've been wanting to learn Spanish, but can't get it out of books. (Me Espanol is muy mal) I'm taking a 24 hour bus ride from Dallas to DF next week and then returning 4 days later, so I expect a perfect opportunity to practice Spanish (or go hungry).

Any suggestions for learning/practicing Spanish on the bus?

Carry a phrase book and a pocket dictionary, look up the words you see on billboards, etc. Listen to what people say, try to figure it out. If the movie is subtitled in Spanish with audio in English, that might help, but sometimes the translation says something quite different. Even if it is dubbed, you may figure out some common phrases.

You may or may not have a chatty seatmate, but it is likely they speak more English than you do Spanish. If you hear or see a phrase repeatedly, but can't figure it out, ask someone about it.

By the way, if books don't work for you, I suggest a tutor, very effective.

Excellent idea.

I'm thinking about taking some magazines and cutting out photos for 'visual flash cards'. I'll have a lot of time to kill on the bus.

Listen carefully in the DF station for your bus to be announced. You won't understand a word, they mumble so fast. Just go to the gate at the appropriate time and show your ticket to the drivers until you find the right bus. Buena Suerte.
