Carry a phrase book and a pocket dictionary, look up the words you see on billboards, etc. Listen to what people say, try to figure it out. If the movie is subtitled in Spanish with audio in English, that might help, but sometimes the translation says something quite different. Even if it is dubbed, you may figure out some common phrases. You may or may not have a chatty seatmate, but it is likely they speak more English than you do Spanish. If you hear or see a phrase repeatedly, but can't figure it out, ask someone about it. By the way, if books don't work for you, I suggest a tutor, very effective.
