Any comments on the Morrill RV facilities in Guanajuato?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi all -- has anyone used the little Morrill RV campground in Guanajuato? I've read about it in the Mexican RV camping book by the Churches and also found a couple of references to it online. We're in a short Toyota Dolphin. We've been to Guanajuato several times but never with this rig, and we *do* know better than to get into the city with an RV!

Thanks in advance,

I don't know about Guanajuato campgrounds, but there are two RV parks in San Miguel de Allende, 94 km away, and you could take a first-class bus into Guanajuato from here. Trailer Park La Siesta, the closest into town (2 km south), best for for catching buses and taxis, is behind the Motel La Siesta, 152-0207. It costs $12 US a night for 60 spaces with full hookups.

We are at the La Siesta right now, there are about 8 rigs here ranging from a Big Foot camper to 3 huge 5th wheels. The price has gone up though and the dollar is dropping. It's 140 pesos per night now with a discount only when paying for a full month. It's a nice place though, quiet for being in town, back off the street, pretty secure and the electricity is good.

Can't help you with Guanajuato, we haven't been there yet and wouldn't try to get to the park in town with our 27' Lazy Daze. We're thinking of driving over there in our jeep between Christmas and New Years though and if you still want to know IM me and I'll tell you what I find.

Thanks, Carol! We stayed at the Hotel Balneario San Ramon when we were in SMA a couple of years ago in our RV. At that time it was 100 pesos a night, and the bus into town was pretty easy. I'd recommend it too.

I've enjoyed a lot of your writings. You might enjoy the two chapters I wrote about San Miguel after that trip.

Best,
Rosana

My information is not terribly current. We used to camp in the Morrill park every year for 2-4 months. When we retired and bought our home in GTO, we had no need to camp there any longer.

Anyhow, I thought it had been left to decline and turn into a parking lot but recently I met a couple that was camping there. They said they could plug in and dump and take a hot shower. That is all we usually look for so I was glad to hear it isn't dead yet.

It is difficult to find but you will have no trouble with a vehicle your size. We camped next to a young couple one year that had a 33' motorhome. I sure wouldn't recommend that!

I really like the location of the Morrill place. It is walking distance to town but far enough out to be out of noisy traffic. You will have the usual neighborhood noises -- lots of dogs. And, if you are birdwatchers, there is a bonus. It is the only reliable place where you can see the blue throated hummer around here.

We arrived at the Morrill Trailer Park yesterday afternoon and are now very hppily set up in one of the most charming spots we've found in a campground. We're next to a house, and have a kind of private patio that has a bench around it with flowers behind the bench. Our internet satellite dish is working fine, as would a TV one. There are several spots with electricity, water and drains. Hummer's comment that they stayed here for several months at a time makes perfect sense to me. We may be here quite a while too! At present we are the only campers, and there are cars parked here from the neighborhood. There are hot showers too, haven't tried them yet.

It was pretty quiet in the night as far as traffic goes. Lots of dogs barking, mostly some distance away, and the roosters start up long before dawn. Heard a burro too.

We walked to downtown this morning, after the manager told us how. Maybe 20 minutes, and half again as long to come back up. The last part is steep.

Finding it wasn't so easy. When we arrived on the edge of Dolores Hidalgo yesterday, coming on Hwy 110 from the east, we followed the first signs we saw for Guanajuato. Big mistake... that ended up bringing us into Gto from the San Miguel direction. We hired a young man guide to hop in the motorhome with us and direct us across the city. He was a help. The directions in the Churches' Guide to Mexican Camping were fine once we got near here.
