cranberries for Thanksgiving

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi,
I am looking for some fresh/frozen cranberries for Thanksgiving. Can I get them ANYWHERE in town? We already went to Queretaro and didn't see any. Just in case I got the canned ones but don't really want to use them.....

Also FYI, they had several types of turkeys at Sams there.

thanks,
Nancy

I've never seen fresh or frozen cranberries in San Miguel, we use the canned from Carey's. Good luck, and if you find some let us know where!

Phil&Nancy:

As much as some folks like to disparage Ajijic, one can find cranberries with no difficulty here and I just started by fresh cranberry sauce. Canned cranberry sauce is to fresh cranberry sauce as cheap Mexican brandy is to Cognac.

The Lake Chapala area offers the best groceries in Mexico bar none. I will tell you this. When it came time for me to make a traditional Alabama style Thanksgiving dinner with Mexican overtones, I found everthing I needed within ten miles of my residence in Ajijic. My indigenous friends from Oaxaca are bringing mole with white rice that is to die over and will also bring fried grasshoppers for those so inclined. And then I drove to Costco in Guadalajara and bought Australian lamb chops and leg of lamb and prime filet and sirloin that you could not find in the best Safeway in Fresno.

Take you NOB and serve it up with grits.

I think they were about 80 pesos a bag.

That's way too much! Pine nuts are cheaper.

Why didn't I look for cranberries last weekend when I was in Chicago?

Would it have been legal to bring them back?

I posted on the Mexican kitchen forum the menu I will be having today, including cranberries, at El Buen Cafe--all you can eat of the following for 175 pesos:

Roasted garlic turkey with mushroom gravy
Cornbread dressing
Pork loin with apple-brandy cream
Dill mashed potatoes
Whipped sweet potatoes with brown sugar
Green beans with toasted almonds
Corn pudding
Whole cranberry sauce
Mixed greens with roasted beets and jicama
Spinach and bacon salad
Homemade breads
French strawberry tart
Chocolate mousse cake
Pumpkin cheesecake
Apple, pecan and pumpkin pies
Iced tea, lemonade and coffee

I am thankful for El Buen Cafe!

Surprise, yesterday or the day before I saw a few bags of fresh cranberries at Carey's on Ancha San Antonio! Maybe they were left over from Thanksgiving, maybe they were a new shipment, I don't know.

But if you have any leftover frozen turkey that could use a good fresh cranberry sauce accompaniment, hurry! They may be gone by now.

I forgot about them until I happened to scroll down and see this thread. (Posted Friday, Dec. 10, either a wee bit late for Thanksgiving or a wee bit early for Christmas.)

If cranberries aren't available for Christmas - many of the cooking tv shows are using pomegranates for turkey. They are making sauces and basting turkey on the grill with them..

Still a lot of packages of whole fresh cranberries at Carey's! I'm tempted to buy one and I don't even particularly like homemade cranberry sauce. I saw a big jar of mince meat for 140 pesos, too--that was tempting, haven't seen mince meat in years. Probably 5000 calories in one mincemeat pie, I'd better pass.
