Bubba, the requirement for the 'smog certificate' does NOT apply to a diesel; I have a diesel car, and the only problem that I have is having to keep up US auto insurance to comply with Calif. requirements.

This problem comes in the tune of a couple of hundred dollars every six months, that is why I am exploring the SD plates.

The only problem I see with SD plates is the one stated by someone above, that of being stopped and the importation Lic. plates not matching the current plates. This could be very bad, depending on the hunger of the cop stopping you.

You can always do a border trip and get fressh vehicle paperwork to match the new SD plates. I have decided to hold off on SD. I'm going to keep my expired Texas plates and investigate the "Texas 30 day transit permit" as a form of registration for US visits.

Is this 'transit permit' only available to 'Texans' or cars with existing Texas plates ?

Will you enlighten us when you have more details on this permit ?

Thanks,

Ignacio

Rolly had mentioned it in another post. I'm not sure of anything about it. That's why I said that I'm going to investigate this mode of registration on my next US visit. You might PM Rolly. If you do, please post any info publically.

I have no personal experience with the Texas transit permit (or what ever the proper name is). My knowledge of it comes from a couple of posts a year or so ago. One fellow said he used it to drive his car home -- to Mississippi, I think. Another drove to Kansas. I have not seen any first-hand reports since then.

John, please tell us what you learn when you go north.

Rolly, I might go in February and will post back what I find out. If anyone else goes up earlier and checks it out, please keep us informed.

You might try the Texas department of transportation website. They may explain this. I'll check it out later if I have time.

In California you DO NOT need a smog certificate if your auto is a diesel, which mine is. I also have the address of my daughter in California.

I decided to renew my California plates, via internet, because of the possibility of being stopped and the plates not matching (CA vs SD) the importation papers. I hate to have some joker stick me and my wife in jail in the middle of nowhere, while we discuss or show, or pay the necessary bribe for this detail.

Thanks for all the advice given by everyone, as always, very helpful !
