Internet availability

Hi folks,

I posted this on the "Technical Mexico" forum but didn't get any response, so I figure I'll try here. Just wondering what kind of internet and satelite TV is available in the Akumal-Puerto Aventuras area. I'm not talking hotels here, I'll be moving into a house.

Thanks!....Fred

Fred,

It's very dependent on exactly where you are for some things, mainly internet. Right in Akumal there is a wireless solution that some say works ok. I think DSL is still too far to the telco in most beach areas although some do have it that live closer to the highway.

What I know works from personal experience is DirecWay 2-way sat internet, with the caveat that you must be assigned to the sat at 117* called SatMex5. That works as far south as Honduras.

For TV, Star works (the Canadian one), Dirct TV does not work, Dish TV will work but you need a larger dish (about 1 meter I think), there is a Mexican sat service that has some english programming but I don't know the dets.

There is cable TV and I believe internet in Playa del Carmen but I haven't heard of it making it too far down the coast yet ... soon, I think.... maybe tomorrow but probably not today...

There are several companies in the area that will hook you up with internet and tv for a fee of course but they handle all the details and install the sat dishes etc.

Go to Happy Hour at Lol-Ha in Akumal and sit over on the left with all the old f*rts and locals and you'll soon know the ins and outs of the whole business.

Haha, that sounds like a plan, Jonna! I figure I'll learn a lot of the ropes my first few months down there. I was wondering if Star Choice was accessible from the Yucatan, I know it seems to be the most popular one in the Chapala/Ajijic area. Thanks for the info!

My downstairs neighbor in Akumal is from Ontario and has Star in his condo. I'm pretty sure he is just using the regular dish. They were nice enough to invite us down to watch the Olympics and it was clear and excellent. That about sums up all I know about Star <g>

One of these days I'm going to investigate more getting a large dish on the roof (we actually already have several up there that aren't used) and bring up my Dish receiver. It's just not that big a priority and so far I haven't done it. Internet, on the other hand, is my top priority and I have put the money and time into that.

Yes, I agree with you, internet is almost a necessity, not only for the email and web access, but I would also like to investigate some of the phone services (like Vonage) that use the internet.
