But today is another day, and our Feast Day week begins

San Miguel looked all scrubbed and clean again Sunday afternoon when we ventured out on our usually-daily walk. The week ahead is chock full of activities for the feast of the city's patron St. Michael, lots of parades and fireworks. We may dare to go to the massive 4 am fireworks the morning of Oct. 2.

The voladores will be doing their circular descent hanging by a rope around one ankle from the high pole in front of the Parroquia several times during the week, their 13 mid-air circles commemorating the Aztec calendar, I think I remember. I'll be brought up to speed on the meaning of all the events somewhere during the week.

The Mojigangas, the huge paper mache figures which are the highlight of the parades, were on display for a month in the courtyard of Belles Artes and there are a whole new bunch of them ready to go--a new wedding couple, a tourist with a camera taking pictures back at the picture-wielding tourists, a new satan, even a Johnny Depp lookalike in his pirate costume.

There's a hint of fall crispness in the air, and we brought out the comforter for night. It's still in the 70s by day, but 55 or so at night. It's still rainy season so we had a whopper storm for an hour or so last night, the satellite TV going out just as the premiere of "Crossing Jordan" came on. I'll catch it during reruns.

Off to watercolor class this morning. All last week I struggled to paint a satisfactory rose. Some day I will do so. Last week was not it.

Carol, I love your reporting on San Miguel. We're getting excited because in less than 2 months, we will be heading out again for our annual trek south to San Miguel. Your reporting makes me feel like I'm almost there and brings me up to date.
