It seems that everyone that settles in Mexico (Chapala), brings their own car. Can any one tell me, if we enter with an FM-2 or FM-3. Are we allowed to purchase a car in Mexico and have Mexican plates and obtain a Mexican Driver's Lic. Also.......Are Motorcycles (Honda) sold in Guadalajara.
Thank you, to any one that can help.

Yes, well it depends on the bike. There is a Honda Motocicleta Agencia located on Lopez Mateos in Guadalajara.
right where La Glorieta de Los Caballos is at.

FM3 – you may bring a foreign plated car or buy a Mexican plated car.

FM2 – you may Not have a foreign plated car, only a Mexican car.
If you drive a foreign plated car, you may have a Mexican driver's license if you wish (good idea to do so). If you drive a Mexican plated car, you must have a Mexican driver's license.
Motorcycles I don’t know about. I'm too old to care. :-)

Driver's License

Can't Post |
Last year my license came up for renewal and one of the requirements was I had to have my picture taken. I wrote to the Motor Vehicle Department and was told, no picture no license. So I had to get a Mexican license. I went to our favourite local police officer, with all the necessary papers that I had to product and he took care of the rest. Then I had to go and take a written test where we were given the questions as well as the answers. We were instructed to get one or two wrong. Then had my picture taken and was given my new license. Mind you it took up 1/2 day, but I now have my Mexican license.
As for the other questions. They were answer very well above.

I used the Jalisco cop we al love. Don't want to post his name here in case he gets transferred again because he helps the gringos. Of course he also helps himself :) He is in Chapala now. If you don't know who he is post here and let me know. He was also the one giving the written test and ahhh answers :)
Actually this was quite interesting. A lot of the road signs here are different that what I was used to and I learned what a lot of the ones I didn't understand, what they meant. If you don't get this test ask for a copy of those road signs.
You could also use Mago in Chapala. Others here might also have suggestions. They only do the drivers license/test once every two weeks so plan ahead. I didn't know this and my out of country license expired and I had to go 6 days without a car to drive.

I've been browsing the most helpful replies to Peter's question "are we allowed to purchase a car in Mexico and have Mexican plates?" As others have pointed out, Peter is indeed allowed to do this with an FM3 visa.
My question is, why would one want to? The car that I brought in with me was relatively inexpensive ...cars purchased in Mexico cost something like 30% more than they do in the US or Canada... and it requires no annual Mexican licensing fees, which I am told are also much higher than Peter would be accustomed to in Florida.
As I understand it, folks who wish to move toward immigrant status with an FM2 visa, or who have run off far end of the five years for FM3 status, may have no choice but for the rest of us it does seem, at first blush, a bit spendy to buy Mexican. Difficult to justify on purely financial grounds.
Maybe someone can help me out here too.
