Silversmith Instructor Wanted

Can't Post | Private Reply
My husband and I are coming to SMA April 2005 for the first time. It is a preliminary trip as there are 5-6 of us who are looking to study silver jewelrymaking there in Fall 2005. Our skills vary from one years work to 20. We desire to se new ideas/different techniques (you always learn something from someone new)...along with being in a beautiful city like SMA. I'd been to raul ybarra's (www.raulybarra.com) site and altho his students do lovely work..as does he...seems he won't teach in English unless he has 6 students which I cannot guarantee. Am wondering if anybody out there has personal experience with someone. Feel free to do a personal reply if you don't want to express yourself in this open forum. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Liane

Welcome to Mexconnect! I sent you a private response recommending Mano a Mano for instruction and the La Mansion del Bonsque close by for a colorful, beautiful, inexpensive hotel with restaurant. Anyone want to comment on either of those recommendations or make any others?

Billy King, who previously taught at the Instituto, has his own studio now called Sterling Quest. I do not have the location or a number yet, but will post it soon. He has a reputation of being a little over the top, but the students who have studied under him say he is a great teacher.

I went to the website you gave for Raul Ybarra and his work is stunning. Sounds like a good choice for your mixture of beginners and advanced students.

I couldn't figure out where the classes are taught--with my Spanish 101 it looked to me as if the classes are taught via webcam, so you could be anyplace and take the class? Probably a webcam is used so that everyone can get a close-up view of the work in progress?

Anyway, if you know where the classes will be and then want more info on the area or any other specifics, please ask again.

Billy King is really good. My wife took a class under him and I saw some of the work his students finished. He has a foul mouth but he is good. Rolla

Is there a website for King? Has anybody studied with or heard about Enrique Lopez, www.internetsanmiguel.com/silver ? From what I see on the Net he's a former teacher at the Instituto...since I am not familiar with this school, I am not sure what that's worth...if anything. Thanks to all for your replies. liane

I can tell you the reason most of the English speaking people (indirecty)are in SMA is because the "Instituto" is responsible for encouraging the arts in this area. In the late 40's Nell Fernandez -married to the govenor of Guanajuato and an Ameican from Arkansas- knew about the GI Bill and was successful in helping form an accredited art academy in SMA. From what I understand he has many happy students.

The best that I can do for you regarding Billy King is his email address: Sterlingquest@hotmail.com. His studio is in Colonia Guadalupe, off of Calzada de Guadalupe.
