Boiled Peanuts

Can't Post |
Occasionally at Gigante's or Comercial Mexicana's deli, along with the offerings of pickled pigs' feet and snouts, I've witnessed what appears to be boiled peanuts. At least, peanuts still in the shell reposing in some form of liquid. Their proximity to the pickled porcine appendages has dissuaded me from trying them, but how exactly is one supposed to consume these peanuts? What is the appropriate accompaniment?

When RVing through Georgia and North Carolina we bought boiled peanuts several times, and our friends simply pulled away the wet shells and ate the peanuts, which were a bit softer than our usual roasted peanuts. The liquid was a simple brine that we discarded. They were more of a between-meal snack rather than part of a meal. Is it different in Mexico?

I'm interested too--sometimes I miss the taste of those boiled peanuts, which were cooked in huge kettles at stands alongside the road.

We had this discussion in June with BammaBubba's usual excellent insight into all things Southern.

Thanks for the link. Bubba does indeed have a flair for description. And I actually saw boiled peanuts at Gigante in SMA today, in the section with other bulk products in big plastic tubs, like olives and moles and pickled pigs feet and wiggly looking stuff. I never looked too closely into those bins before, maybe afraid of what I would see! I wonder what else I'm missing?

Some of those mole sauces are delish. So are the pickled pigs feet. Have courage and try them..

I'm not sure what you mean by wiggly looking stuff, but you may also find pickled pig fat/skin which Doņa Martha puts on tostadas. It looks a little like manicotti and tastes a lot like pickled pig feet -- which really aren't feet, rather the shank. I like it a lot.
