Can't Post | Private Reply

Rolly, or some other gentle and constructive critic, I offer the following: I have been an infrequent poster on the General Forum, and I suspect that my failure to spend more time on this learning forum, is at the heart of my difficulty. Allow me to explain...I started a new thread on the General Forum and received several replys to my post. When I tried to reply in thanks to those who responded, I hit "Reply" and was advised that my msg had gone only to a single person. I had intended to say a word of thanks to all who responded and not just to this one individual. Should I have clicked on "Quote" instead? It seems, if I had wanted to reply only to one individual, that I would have clicked on "Private Reply." I'm sure there is a simple answer to my dilemma but I don't know what it is. All help will be appreciated. Thanks, David

Hmm; I know this is not what you want to hear, but the only explanation I can think of (or replicate) is that you accidentally hit the Private Reply rather than the Reply button. If you're not sure which you hit on some future occasion, then look at the bottom of the screen - if it says "Preview Post" somewhere, you've composed a posting to the Forum. If, on the other hand, you see a "Preview Reply" button, then you've composed a Private Message. whether accidentally or deliberately, Tony.

Hey Tony, thanks for the quick response. I have no doubt that I could have made such a mistake. What is the "Quote" button for? A hypothetical...if I post a msg and have four responses, and I want to reply to all four, openly, do I hit "Reply" to the last msg? If I want to reply only to #2, openly, what do I do? If I want to reply to someone privately, I assume that I would click on "Private Reply." Please bear with me. I can do this. David

David,
You're doing fine, and trying things out is what this Forum is for!
When they're working, computers are wonderful things... To find out what the "Quote" button is for, try pressing it in response to this message - you should get a reply screen already including this message!
If you want to reply to multiple respondents, either reply to the last in the list, or find your original message and then "reply" to it - everyone will see that as a new message on the same thread.
You're absolutely right that "Private Reply" will send a private message to a single individual (but only provided that that individual has not switched "Prviate Reply" off in their preferences.) In other words, some posters may have opted not to allow Private Replies.

OK Tony, I hit the quote button and then hit post reply and what I have accomplised is to re-post your msg back on the forum. I suspect that I should have written my response to the bottom of your msg and maybe both would then be posted. Help me with this one and I do believe you have me attuned to the other items. Thanks again. David

Hi Davie,

Yes, you can write a message after the quote box. However, there is sometimes a problem. There is a bug in the program that effects some computers and not others. You write a message after the quote box, and it shows on your computer as you compose, but as soon as you hit the Post Reply button, your message disappears while the quoted passage remains. Damn frustrating. My computer is one of those subject to this bug, so I can't use the Quote function at all. You won' know if your computer is OK or not until you try it.

Thanks Rolly, maybe I will just stay away from the "Quote" option. Good to hear from you. I have enjoyed your posts for a long time now. David
