We visited Belize City 4 years ago and stayed at the Radisson St. George, a very nice hotel. We were told not to go out at night unless hotel driver took us directly to where we were going because of the crime. We were even accosted by some dirty (& dangerous looking) people in broad daylight.
After 2 days, we left & spent the next 5 days on Ambergris Caye. We loved it!! However, a friend of ours sells real estate in Puerto Vallarta & she is helping a couple from the Caye relocate to Puerto Vallarta because they have had to rebuilt 3 times due to hurricanes. I hear that area (& the northern Yucatan) is called Hurricane alley.

What happened? Did the first part of my message reach you? Or did it disappear? I wasn't done...

I know a few people who have lived there and loved it.
It is a poor country and that's why they left. They had a hard time making a living there. I think if you stay out of Belize City as much as possible, you should be fine.

As you mention flying time to Belize/GDL are the same it sounds like you are either planning on using which ever area you choose as a part time place or in any case you will be coming and going a lot or what diff would the flying time make as to you decision of area? Belize has a few good attributes, but in my oppinion would not be one my list of opptions for a perminant residence, maybe part time? It is small, no culture { of much interest },no historical archetecture,no Arts, and to me becomes VERY BOREING FAST. AND I WOULD NEVER BUY PROPERTY before I had a long long stay to try it there. Not if but when you change your mind you will most likely own you bit of X paridice for a long long long time. Easy to Buy, Hard to Sell.... Oh and I have been there for a LONG stay. Good Luck

Politics- Pretty stable
Climate - Hot humid, things rot fast
Cultural interests - Some Mayan sites, nothing much more. A kind of English is spoken as well as some Spanish
A poor country with a lot of petty crime.
Snorkeling is good, fishing too.
