Lemon/Lima Withdrawl

Can't Post | Private Reply
What's up with the lack of lemons here?
Is it just here in México City where you can't find them - or is it a nationwide drought?

I use the readily available green limes/limónes for just about every thing, but there are some dishes that just have to have that particular lemon juice flavor.

Egyptian lentil soup, hummus and asparagus all cry out for the yellow lemon.

Any idea where I can find them? I once bought a lemony-looking thing in Superama, but it was really sweet, I have no idea what that was.

Thanks!

If you should ever find any lemons in Mexico, please buy some for me. I like limes for many things, but they just don't cut it in iced tea.

Sam's Club has been selling big juicy lemons. Also, it's easy to grow them here. With a little research, you can graft a Lemon onto almost any citrus tree.

When we lived in Chiapas, my daughter married a young man from there. That was almost five years ago. When they were finally able to move to the US together, the one single thing that amazed him most was our familiar yellow lemons. (Not that he particularly liked them!) The second most amazing thing was iced tea rather than fresh fruit drinks. At least Houston's markets offered both lemons and the limes he was familiar with.

Carey's, one of our local gourmet imported foods delis in San Miguel, has Realemon bottled lemon juice once in a while, and we always grab a bottle when we see it for just those dishes that must have lemon juice. Hummus, yes. Look around at such delis for the bottled stuff, which will keep a long time in the fridge. You can't count on finding fresh ones when you need them, even at Costco.

Some people have limon real and they are huge yellow lemon with a thick skin. They are not quite as tart as some of the small lemons but they are a good substitute. The problem is that I have seen them in people's gardens but never seen them for sale. Cosco in Guadalajara and Superlake in San Antonio on Lake Chapala also sell lemons sometimes. Whenever my tree or my friend's tree bear lemon I freeze the juice in ice cube container to be able to use it when I cook. I also bought a lemon tree at Exotica at the corner of the Libremiento and the carrratera but I wonder if it will ever produce.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will definately try Costco, and the lemon juice bottle for a backup.

I have considered growing a lemon tree, but I always thought they would take up alot of room. I only have a small balcony and a little laundry cage on the roof. I guess I could try grafting a lemon seedling on to my exsiting lime tree, but to tell the truth, I haven't seen an actual lime on it for months so it may be a lost cause.

.....Not so good with the vegetable plants I guess. I haven't had any luck at all with limes or tomatoes. (I like to blame it on the pollution!)

I have even considered preserving lemons in salt like they used to in the pre-fridge days, but it just sounds kind of gross. Although I am originally from Oregon, I am not that frontiers-y.

Entonces, Costco it is.

Bubba -

yeah, that must have been what I bought - a Lemon Real. It was so big - I brought it home and was jumping up and down so happy........until I tried it.
No bite at all....

We couldn't find lemons in Monterrey either or bottles of ReaLemon either. I am rather curious about that myself!

I also saw some at Sorianna's, and picked up a batch for my neighbors who were very happy to receive them.

In Sorianna's they are called real limons.
