Removing and reinstalling Windows.

I have searched on the internet but cannot find any instructions for removing and reinstalling my operating system (Windows Mellenium). Would any one know where I could find such instructions (preferably simplified). I have been instructed to do this by a Dell Technician because Internet Explorer has become corrupted and I cannot use it. My computer is off warranty and Dell will not allow their technicians to help me. I am currently using Mozilla Firefox and do not like it because some programs only function with Internet Explorer.

Until you get windows reinstalled you might try Opera. We were using IE and now find we like Opera better.

John:

I was hoping someone else like ET would tell you what to do here. I have removed and reinstalled XP and I was nervous the whole time. It worked. But I would never dare give someone else advise about doing this for fear that something might go wrong. There is also the "Repair" option which I tried. But because I end up doing this about once every hundred years (or so it seems) I would be afraid to tell anyone how to do it.

WHAT EVER YOU DO, and I like UJ's advise below, back up your data or is that BACKUP your data? I can't stress the backup issue enough

My first piece of advice is to get rid of MS Millennium. It is possible the worst POS ever foisted on the computer public. It gave me fits for almost two years. Beg, borrow, buy or steal Windows XP preferably the Pro version.

I have MS Mellinium because that's what came with my Dell computer when I bought it about 4 years ago. No problems whatsoever. But then, when I punched the "on" button, I told you all I know about computers!!

Since my original post I have accomplished the task of removing and reinstalling WMe. I accomplished this by repeatedly calling Dell Latin America Technical Service until I got a technician that would help me. It appears that when your Dell computer is off warranty, that it is totally up to the individual technician as to whether they will do something for you as major as this task.
Now, the latest problem is that for some unknown reason my available hard drive space is less now than before the remove/install. Before I had 1.78 gb out of 2.0 gb total. Now after the remove/install I have 1.42 gb out of 2.0 gb total. Somehow I think the old windows was not removed and the new copy was installed on top of it, if that's possible, thus explaining less available hard drive space.

Boy, that's an old laptop isn't it John. The smallest Hard drive I could find that Dell sells is 15 times larger than your 2 GB unit. Just for the heck of it I checked with a supplier in my neck of the woods (NW WA) and he said he could still find one that only holds 20 GB for $90 something and that a hard drive twice that size sells for about $15 more.

I was looking at the Stats for operating systems at www.pcpitstop.com and learned that for those folks using Laptops who tested their computers at their site that about 78% use XP, about 10% 2K, 9% Win'98, and 3 % WinMe.

What does that all mean? Heck if I know. I just found it interesting. If the laptop meets your needs, that's all that counts.

My mistake. I got my decimal points in the wrong locations. The hard drive is 20 gb in a desktop. (Dimension 4100 model, and it's only three years old). Before removing Windows there was 17.8 gb of free space. After reinstalling Windows there was 11.42 gb of free space, and now that I've reinstalled all the original programs and downloaded Internet Explorer 6.0 from Microsoft, the free space is at 1.3 gb. Something is drastically wrong, because, as my computer stands right now, with 1.3 gb free, it is the same configuration as when it had 17.8 gb free. I can't imagine what could suddenly be using up so much space. I am extremely frustated.

It sounds like it's time to check what you have in duplicate on that hard drive. Have fun using Windows Explorer checking out what's on the hard drive. Go to programs, accessories and then Windows Explorer to check out what is on your hard drive

OK, I'm giving in. I'm going to buy Windows XP and a larger hard drive. Next question: Where does one find Windows XP in English, and a 60 to 80 gb hard drive with instructions and cd-rom in English? I live in Guanajuato, Gto. and I just called Office Max in Leon and they do not have XP in English. (I didn't ask about the hard drive) I also called one store in San Miguel de Allende and no XP in English. Also, can any one recommend a particular hard drive?

John,
I agree that you should switch to XP, but I don't think you necessarily need a bigger hard drive. I have a Dell laptop with a 20 gig hard drive split to two partitions, one 5 gig (for Win98) and one 15 gig (for XP). I can boot to either operating system and both partitions have ample free space. So, if you format and start from scratch with a clean XP install, I think you will find you have plenty of hard drive space with 20 gig.

You have a Dell. You could always go to www.dell.com.mx, look for the 800 # for Mexico, phone them up, and order what ever you want, to include XP in English. Usually you will be speaking to someone in Texas, one time I got Panama, and they can help you.I think they are all bi-lingual. Many of us buy Dell products that way.

Oh, I know you can buy XP in English, when you buy a new Dell computer in Mexico, I presume you could buy an XP upgrade for your older laptop

Oh; here's the # from MX

That's just it. A Dell Computer technician just removed windows from my harddrive and reinstalled it. Before this action I had about 87% of my drive free, but now, afterwards there is only 6% free, as stated above. If I go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Info and then Components, Storage , and drives, it says that there is a 1.99 gb hard drive in place. If I use the program, Belarc Advisor, it says the same thing. However my paper work that came with the computer states it has a 20 gb hard drive. Something is wrong and I do not know what, because a 20 gb hard drive does not change into a 1.99 gb hard drive from one day to the next. On Monday I am phoning Dell to see if they know what is going on. It is very cheap to get another drive as somebody stated above.

Recently, I, too, needed a new windows Xp pro. Could not reasonably locate one here in MExico. I ended up buying a new one on e-bay for 99 US dollars and had a friend bring it. Installing it was a breeze. This new xp included service pack 1a.

I hope you can buy XP from Dell here in Mexico. If not, you may want to check with Computers Worth, http://www.computersworth.com/ online. They have many software programs at low prices. They have XP Home for $84 US Dlls, and XP Professional for $129 for the OEM version and $205 US Dlls for the retail box version..

Three years ago I bought an OEM version of W 2000 Pro from them. It came with an installation manual, but no users manual. I don’t know what any other differences there are between the OEM and the retail version are. It’s a little tough to learn a new operating system without a manual. I bought two books from Powell’s Books. They were a big help. They are “W2K for dummies” (for my wife of course) and “W2K, The missing manuals.”

There is a shipping charge. I had mine shipped to me here in Mexico. It took a phone call to them to arrange that. The rep I spoke to had to check with his supervisor, he got permission to ship here, if I had an American credit card with a US address. I was charged 49% import duty when it was delivered.

If you have someone that you can have it sent to in The US, and then have them bring, or send it to you I would do it that way, if I had known the import duty was going to be so high, that’s the way I would have done it. My daughter sends me my important mail via FedEx periodically, tax papers, etc. she has sent me several disks over the years.

She sets a value of $1 Dollar on them, and lists them as “Data Disks.” I had told her to never set a high value on them, and to never insure them. If you do, you are much more likely to have import duty to pay. I have never had to pay import duty on any of the disks she has sent me.

If you do have it shipped to you here, even with the import duty, you will probably pay no more than you would for it in The US at a retail price.

I don’t know much about hard drives, but three years ago, I bought an IBM 60GB hard drive in Mexico City for $1000 Pesos. IBM sold their hard drive business to Hitachi, and they still offer very good support for the drive that I have. I think that any name brand hard drive would be fine.

You probably won’t find a hard drive at any of the big computer stores. When I was looking for one, the people at Office Max and Office Depot here in Cuernavaca told me that “We don’t sell computer parts.” Both stores wanted me to bring my computer in so they could send it out to a shop to have one installed. Call me crazy, but I couldn’t see paying two markups. I found, and bought one in a little shop in Mexico City.

I have found that the best way to find computer parts here is to ask your Mexican friends where to find a place where they are sold. I have found a couple of places here where I have bought parts, power supplies, etc. Don’t be put off by the appearance of those little shops. Most of them are no bigger than a walk in closet, but they have a lot of stuff in them. Until Wal-Mart opened last year, it was almost impossible to find a network cable here. You can also look in The Yellow pages, although they are not very informative here, many stores will put an ad in the book, but no phone number. I suppose they want you to visit them instead of calling them. That is frustrating.

Here's an update on the dilemma of my missing hard drive space: I called Dell Technical Support today and the technician found that whoever at Dell formatted my hard drive the other day did it wrong. They formated it in FAT16 rather than in FAT32. Fat16 was used in a version of Windows prior to Windows 95 and only supported hard drives up to 2 gb. That is how my hard drive changed from 20 gb to 2 gb over night. The new technician had to remove and reinstall Windows Mellinium all over again, this time doing it in FAT32. Now my hard drive is gack to normal with a 20 gb capacity, of which 18.7 gb is free. So I guess I don't need a hard drive after all. I'm still going to get Windows XP though.

Check the yellow pages and call around to some computer shops. We purchased our computer at Sam's Club here in Mazatlán and it came with Millenium in Spanish. I wasn't pleased with Millenium, and had constant problems with crashes. We eventually took it to a computer shop to have more RAM installed and at the same time had them install Windows XP in English. No more problems with Windows.
