Email Troubles--Prodigy and Laguna

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm about to spit, I'm so frustrated. I send emails and they don't arrive. People ask me, "Did you get my email?" "No." "Did you get mine?" "No, did you send me one?"

Who at Lake Chapala besides me is having trouble with Prodigy and Laguna? Geez, computers--can't live with'em, can't live without'em.

You use Prodigy. I presume you are using the prodigy email package, and not a web based service via prodigy, like Incredimail. If you are using Incredimail via prodigy or whomever, understand that Incredimail mimics some of the characteristics of spam and is sometimes deleted by ISP spam filters.

Certain ISPs in Canada and the US block all email from Prodigy because they believe Prodigy doesn't do a very good job at blocking spam. But it is my understanding that when they do block an email, that the email is returned to the sender with a note explaining that the email was blocked.

I see all of the support email sent to Laguna. Some clients have had problems sending and receiving email and the problem has had to do with incorrect mail settings either in the user's computer or at the ISP. But there have been no emails sent to "support" complaining about email simply disappearing.

Remember there has been a new worm virus active lakeside since July 19th. I hope your emails are not getting zapped because they are infected. If the problem keeps up, let us know all of the facts so that we can try to come up with what is happening.

Thanks for the explanations, Pete.

I've never used Incredimail. This problem could be related to virus activity, but my computer isn't infected and I run frequent updates manually (and a scan at least once a week) in addition to the LiveUpdate function of Norton--so who knows. And it's not just a Prodigy problem. Whatever it is, is affecting Laguna folks too. This started on Friday night or Saturday morning.

I'm all too familiar with the ISP blocks in the USA and Canada. Emails sent to those blocking ISPs are definitely returned to sender.

It's not a situation like any of the ones you described.

The emails I'm talking about simply don't arrive. They disappear into the maw of cyberspace. It's frustrating when your correspondent asks you a question, you reply by return email, and then a day later (or longer), your correspondent says, "Well, are you going to answer me or just leave me hanging?"--or words to that effect.

If it's not resolved by this afternoon, I'll call Prodigy and see what they say.

I have received two messages from the "Postmaster" at lagunanet that I have sent messages containing viruses to two individual parties also on lagunanet. I do not know either of the parties. Their e-mail addresses are not in my address book and I have run Norton twice and found nothing.

Any guesses?

Jack:

Your question is easy to answer. Imagine now someone who has your email address in his address book. Let's assume that his computer was taken over by this latest virus. That virus enters his address book and randomly chooses someone else's address (perhaps yours) to put in his FROM box in the emails that are sent out carrying the virus.

You look like the bad guy, but you are not. Sadly it's been happening a lot lately, especially after the latest virus was discovered and started spreading on July 19th

Esperanza:

I don't know what is creating your problem. I hope someone else does. The only ideas I had, you were already well aware of, and had already taken the appropriate actions to protect against.

I'm having the same problem with Prodigy here. Disappearing emails, which IS really frustrating. This has gone on for the past few days now. I hope Prodigy can get it together soon.
