Anyone using Opera?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I just installed Opera (a browser) to see how I like it in the interests of ignoring IE.

I had some problems logging into MexConnect but it seems to be working now. I still cannot post using the advanced editor and I'm wondering what that's about. ***never mind, I just read in the profile preferences that it requires IE 5.x or greater. Damn, I hate those MS only things. Embrace and expand strikes again ***

So far, I like this browser. It has some good extras and it seems to work well. Anyone else using it?

I've used it before and found it fast and efficient. I can't remember why I don't use it now but it's probably because Microsoft is still trying to corner the market and make things so that no one else can use anything other than their products. If you really want to get hip to something that will change your view of operating systems, take a look at Linux. It is better than any system out there. In fact the server that runs this site is probably running Linux. Just a guess. Other than that, you'll probably have to put up with microsoft even though it's third in line, in terms of quality when it comes to operating systems. They won with marketing game not the quality one. I too wish I had invested in Microsoft stock in the beginning because I'd be like Paul Allen now although I would still be in Mexico. And, I'd be using Linux for everything. I bet you that even Microsofts main servers are running Linux.

Yes, I have a dual boot laptop that runs linux or xp. It's a leftover from when I still worked though and I don't often use it anymore. I also have a mac laptop and do still use that, I'm getting a new one soon in fact. It is much hipper under the hood now that it runs on unix. So, I call myself bi-OS'd although I also speak some unix so maybe tri-os'd? Heh!

You are right about MS and the general lethargy that lets them succeed. I got this laptop for some specific programs (Access) and never bothered to change the browser or the email client as I don't use them often. After awhile, you forget you even meant to. I'm getting another small sony vaio and I finally decided to download and try Opera while I'm still on the old laptop. This past weekend's russian debacle is what reminded me to do it.

Next on my list is to try Eudora for PC again, I didn't like it a couple years ago on a 98SE box at work as it seemed to be the thing that made the system unstable. It could have been something else but blaming it on Eudora (and uninstalling it) cured the problem. XP is a lot more stable than any previous MS OS so I'm hoping Eudora will work well on it.

I want to try all these out on this laptop as I'm getting rid of it soon. If it geeks the system too bad it won't matter.

I second the wish for MS stock, I've a friend in Akumal whose father worked for MS early on. Needless to say, she's set for life. Apple stock hasn't done so badly either, I wish I'd bought it at $7 a few years ago. As for Paul Allen, he wins the top prize in my book for geek with untold billions who has spent it with style and imagination. I dislike MS and all they stand for but I'm a big fan of Paul Allen.

Here's an intersting article in Business Week titled 'Internet Explorer is just too risky' about IE security flaws. It also mentions some options like Opera and Firefox.

Then you can run Safari, Apple's MacOS X only offering which caused Microsoft to back out of the MacOS browser race. Built off of Konqueror's KHTML rendering engine, it rocks! It got me to relegate both iCab and Opera off into partition never-never land.

Sounds to me like you are in more control than i am. I'm sort of surprised that you are having problems with Opera... I thought they had done their code to conform but who the hell knows, MS is always trying to rain on everyones parade with their propriatary code crap. In otherwords, you are ahead of the game and I doubt you'll find many answers here. Let me know what you find. I have some acquaintances who are running some new form of Linux and doing well with it both with their browser and everything else. If you want to know what version they are running, let me know and I'll tell you.

Safari is really good. On my current mac I have an older version, not the most current, and it's pretty good. My understanding is that the newest one is even better.

All the MS bashing aside, and whether we like it or not, there are some things that only work well on a MS OS. They are not many but they do still exist. I use 2 of them. Access database for consulting work I still do and mapping programs that link to my GPS. There are mac and linux options for both those things but they don't do what I need them to do.

I just figured a way around a third, pointing software for 2 way internet. There is a newer directway modem (6000)that includes a pc and eliminates the need for a standalone pc to connect to the satellite. That's a step in the right direction. I'm getting one in a month or so, before we go back SOB. You guys in Ajijic have broadband options that we don't have yet in Akumal. I also spend months traveling in the RV and I'll be able to use it there as well. I guess I should add a big *knock on wood* to that since I haven't even gotten it yet much less tried setting it up. It's working for others though so I'm hopeful.

Safari is mac OSX native and depends on the mac GUI Aqua so it isn't available for other OS. That said, the more I use Opera the better I like it and it has all the functions I like in Safari like tabbed browsing and pop up blockers. Opera is available for Linux as well as other flavors of unix and even cell phones and pda's.

The 2-way sat internet I'm getting is just Directway which is sold generally for fixed mounting. While not technically authorized, dealers have been selling it for moveable mounting (RVs mainly) for many years. It's doubtful that anyone will try to shut them down now. There are a lot of dealers, even some in MX, and the main difference between them is the type of mount or tripod they include, the training they give you in setting it up and the after sale service and tech support they offer.

I got in on a beta test for a tripod mount designed by one of the dealers. This way, it's costing me $800 for the equipment rather than about $1300. The monthly cost is the same, $59 for a basic service. If I hadn't gotten this beta deal I would have just bought the sat and tripod and gotten the same service.

There are 2 companies in current operation offering mobile sat service, starband and direct. Since I want to use this at my condo in Akumal as well as in the RV, I need direct's sat as it has a better footprint in Mexico and Central America. In fact, using their SatMex5 satellite, you can get good 2-way internet as far south as Honduras. Starband reportedly cuts off near Monterey.

There are a couple of sites that have info about Directway and about sats in Mexico. Here's the url for the dealer I'm getting my set from http://www.dustyfoot.com I'm getting The Dustyfoot, the Datastorm is an automatic sat finder that is permanently mounted on an rv roof. This is a forum for a dealer in Houston who has affiliated installers throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. http://www.dbstvforum.com He may have an affiliate in Maz as well. I think I spotted our Tech forum moderator on there so he may have more info about it.

Getting a fast internet connection is really important to me. Using the Telmex dialup has made my life more difficult than it has to be when we are in Mexico... and that's when I'm at home there. Forget trying to get much done when we are traveling elsewhere in MX or in Central America. I still do some database work on the side and I have to be able to move files around and communicate and test. The problem for me with sat internet is that it is FAP'd and I may have to upgrade to a higher priced monthly account to get a larger FAP. -- FAP or Fair Access Policy is in place to keep some users from hogging all the bandwidth. If you use too much, you will get your speed cut to a dribble until a set amount of time has passed. -- The speed in a sat internet connection is all down, upload speeds are slow.

There is also a significant lag that makes some VOIP unworkable. It also makes other types of use difficult, VPN and remote access can have problems. We can't yet beat the old speed of light and these sats are a good distance up in the sky...travel time counts.

Bottom line, if you have other options for broadband they will undoubtably be better. If you don't, sat beats the hell out of dialup.

I'm starting to really like Opera. I have the free version but I may buy the pro version soon. The free version has an ad bar at the top and when you install you get a choice of having plain text generic ads or ads chosen by your surfing habits. Out of curiousity, I chose the latter. It's pretty amusing to watch the ads change with the pages I go to. Right now, I have two ads for hotels in Isla Mujeres because I just read the thread in Construction and followed a link to the sad woes of people building there. Awhile back, I had a couple of RV ads and one for the RV dealership in Florida called Lazy Daze. This because I was reading a forum about our lazy daze brand of rv. It's crude but it works, I'm resisting going to some of the spam websites I receive to see what pops up there while I'm learning to increase virility.

Well, while I was writing this, the ads changed to Gallery San Miguel Online and the Azucena b&b in San Miguel. One thing that is really working is that I'm paying attention to the ads to watch them change.

I've used Opera for years as an alternate browser. It started out as a light, fast browser, but has over time heavied up. But it's still far better than IE or Netscape.

My favorite browser, which I've used as primary for about a year now, is FastBrowser.

http://www.fastbrowser.net/

It really is fast and I have 10-20 windows open at a time on a regular basis with complete stability and no popups. As far as I know, they still have a free trial.
