Email to prodigy clients

Can't Post | Private Reply
Since Friday evening I have been trying to email several friends who have ******@prodigy.net.mx email addresses. I have sent emails from both a US and a Mexican based server. Each time I get a message back stating

Host unknown (Name server: prodigy.net.mx: host not found)

Does anyone know what is happening?

Pete, it appears that Prodigy email is out of order at the moment. I haven't received anything since about 9.30 last night, and when I try to send, everything bounces back saying 'sender domain unknown'. If it's not fixed in a little while I'm going to call them. If they tell me anything that sounds like an accurate estimate of what's wrong and when it will be fixed, I'll post it here.

Yes, indeed... The problems continue. It is frustrating to say the least. My neighbor across the street has Megacable high speed, and she was offline all day yesterday so that made me feel better. A little trick I use is to send outgoing mail from Hotmail via my Outlook account, as I preset that option. (I don't have to sign into hotmail separately to do this) I do this everytime I suspect that prodigy is misbehaving, which incidentally has been a lot over the past few months. The recipients of my email then respond to my hotmail address which I again receive into my Outlook mailbox just as if it were my prodigy address being used. A bit of a hassle but hopefully they are improving things. The major amounts of spam stopped, as noted by another poster recently.

Pete, I just got off about an hour-long phone call with Prodigy. They swear that there's nothing wrong with Prodigy, but that it is some server on the West Coast of the USA that's having trouble. They had me go to 'Run' and then type in cmd, then tracert XXXXXXXservername.com...which brought up the whole string of DNS's that the email passes through to get to its destination. It was really interesting and I learned a lot, but I didn't really get a satisfactory answer from them. They told me to try sending again either !Sunday or Monday! to see if the problem had resolved itself--what a PITA. I personally think it is a Prodigy problem and they just didn't want to own up to it. Tell me what luck you've had.

At least I can now send to XXXXXXX@laguna.com.mx and it seems to go through--although it's hard to tell, because sometimes my emails take up to 12 hours to go from Prodigy here in town to Laguna here in town.

Advice?

People over on the San Carlos board are complaining that Prodigy is not working so it's Prodigy, no matter what they say.

A friend came over to the house this afternoon reporting the same problem thinking it was her computer. It is possible that a California DNS Server could be at fault. DNS is a Domain Name Server that converts the pop3.prodigy.net.mx to an ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Since everyone is getting a server not found error, it would seem the server responsible for that translation is down.

To send and receive email, you can go to http://www.prodigy.com.mx and in the top right corner where it says Consulta tu correo, choose prodigy.net.mx from the drop down, enter your email name (without the @prodigy.net.mx in usuario ), then enter your password (contraseña) and click the entrar button.

You should at least be able to see your email and depending on your Spanish, send some also.

You can also go directly to email by entering http://mail.prodigy.com.mx

During the course of today I have sent a couple of test messages from my US address to my Prodigy address. I just went to Prodigy to check on them, following your link, and nothing is there. It's been 7 hours since the first test went off. The second link came back as "could not be found". Thanks for the input - it is appreciated.

John, I appreciate your help, but it doesn't work...the emails aren't making it into the Prodigy server. And the emails that I sent about an hour ago to xxxxxxxx@Laguna.com.mx aren't getting to their destination either...they haven't been returned, but they aren't getting through.

And as you said, Bournemouth, I'm equally certain that it's a Prodigy problem. Chatting for an hour with the tech taught me some stuff, but it didn't resolve anything.

Thanks for posting here, UJ. I sent an email (which never arrived) to our mutual friend Ms Judy, so at least mine to you did get there. Yours to me, of course, did not. What a p***er.

And by the way, I learned today that your Laguna emails are routed from here in Jalisco through San Antonio, Houston, and then back through Mexico in order to get from your house to my house--and when it works, it works in an instant. Amazing.

Yes I get the same message up here in WA ( Host unknown (Name server: prodigy.net.mx: host not found) . I have been experimenting around sending and receiving email from both the lagunanet email server and the server I use up here.

Although the messages always got through with lagunanet (via squirrel mail), one time I did get an error message created by a problem in one of the server's anti spam software programs and occasionally it would take maybe 15 seconds longer than usuall for me to remotely send mail out from lagunanet, up here in WA, via the web based squirrel mail software. Those who know more than I, can guess what this means and/or whether this delay at Laguna is related to the prodigy failure.

It sure is great having this forum and learning from all of you what is happening, especially the comments from Esperanza about her contact with Prodigy Support. So far Laguna Support has only received one email about the problem. The lagunanet user asked why some of her neighbors couldn't send her email, and wondered if the problem were at Lagunanet.

OK gang, once again I just now got off the phone with Prodigy. This time they did own up to it: the tech told me, "Oh yes, we are testing a new application for Prodigy and it has affected many of our users. It's not your computer or the computers of any of your friends, it is Prodigy. The testing will be finished late tonight or at the latest by Sunday afternoon and you will be able to use your email as always. Don't do anything to change your configurations, it's not you. We're sorry for the bother."

We shall see.

Thanks for your persistance Esperanza. My test messages to Prodigy of this morning have vanished into cyberspace. My later messages have been kicked back by my US server, saying Prodigy doesn't exist - that's one heck of a test they're running there!

Mexconnect's mail service is working fine as is my Hotmail account, so there are other roads out of town.
