dial up connection for Prodigy.net.mx in Sac, California

Can't Post | Private Reply
Forgot to call Prod 1-800# (can't call the 800# from CA)in Mex before I left and they don't answer my emails-surprise. Does anyone have any ideas on how to connect to Prod here? Prod in Cal. does not recognize my .net.mx email. Can get my current email by logging on to PROD.net.mx.com but I need my original OutLook express. Any help greatly appreciated.

The number to connect to Prodigy in Sacramento is listed on the Prodigy website (www.prodigy.net.mx). The link to the page of USA Prodigy connection numbers is:

http://www.prodigy.com.mx/...a/cobertura_usa.html

Type the Sacramento number in where the number you usually use in Mexico is shown and you should be connected with no problem.

I may be being very slow on the uptake (quite possible) but I can never get that site to deliver me any numbers. Yes, there's a list of the towns in the US that have coverage available - but no numbers. I know they're there somewhere because some kind soul on this forum got me the Tucson numbers but maybe a quick seminar from someone knowledgeable would help those of us who seem to be technologically impaired. I'm using Netscape 7.1 as a browser, if that makes any difference.

O.K. - I'm working this out for myself - I switched over to Internet Explorer and - lo and behold - numbers. Why one browser works with the site and the other doesn't, who knows.

When I began work on my website a couple of years ago, I tested it with IE, Netscape and AOL's version of IE. I wanted to be sure the pages would look right on all browsers. Some of the fancy tricks I wanted to use would not work right on Netscape, so I canned the fancy stuff and made straight pages. There is no doubt that Netscape marches to a different drummer.

Could it be that you're inserting an extra Top Level Domain (TLD) into your mailserver name? Prodigy Mexico owns both the prodigy.com.mx and prodigy.com.mx domains, as well as a number of others, but no prodigy.net.mx.com, a name construct that would confuse the heck out of any domain name server.

Regardless, while traveling, particularly if you're using borrowed computers, an internet cafe, or public access equipment like from a library, have you considered accessing your email via a web browser instead of an email client like shudder MS Outlook? Prodigy Mexico, like any self-respecting internet service provider these days offers a webmail front end to their mail servers. Hit the Prodigy Mexico home page and look for the dark blue box in the upper right-hand corner labeled Miembros Prodigy - Consulta tu correo. Then just choose the appropriate mail server from the pull-down menu, enter your user ID and password, and click on the "enter" button.

Don't be so certain that Netscape Navigator/Communicator is the problem browser. Microsoft HTML code generation products like Front Page, and to a certain degree their web hosting software is notorious for aberrant behavior with non-Microsoft web browsers although the browsers may be fully compliant with the various standards. It's more of a case of Microsoft adding non-standard code (or making liberal reinterpretations of the standards) than the other browsers being broken.

Thanks for your input, Esperanza. The page for coberturas for US is not active. Checked the Mex listings and that pops right up. I think one problem may be that Prodigy in USA is now under auspices of SBC phone company and Yahoo. When I called them up they can not bring up any info/accounts re Prodigy in Mexico. Have had success when I log in on the Prod page but it only accesses current email. I have a gap of about 3 weeks between time I left Mex and logged on in US.

If I understood you correctly, you are in the States, have an active Mexican prodigy account, and wish to check your email, not via a web based mail system, but using your Outlook Express software. I further understand you followed Esperanza's instructions and don't believe it is possible to obtain the telephone #s from the web page she referenced while in the states.

I too am in the States for a few weeks. I followed Esperanza's instructions went to the web page she suggested, clicked on the Seleccione: down arrow, and discovered (I think you are in Sacramento) 8 local telephone numbers to choose from, the first of which was 916-244-6911.

The rest is easy, simply open up Outlook Express, click on tools, then Accounts, and under the mail "tab" click on New, then Mail and then follow the instructions as you setup your "new" account

I haven't tried the above because I don't have a Prodigy account, but I am told that it works

Thanks, Pete. It does indeed work. I also found 8 numbers for access in Sacramento alone.

An alternative is to go to www.mail2web.com. When that page opens, type your email address in the indicated spot and your Prodigy password in the 'password' spot. Mail2web will show you all your email since you left Mexico; you can reply from that website and your reply will appear to be from your ordinary Prodigy account. You will not have access to your Outlook Express address book, however.

I've used Mail2web extensively when traveling, both in the USA and in Europe. In addition, I always use the Prodigy number that is local where I am when I'm traveling in the USA or Mexico. Using this method in a hotel is a snap with a laptop and the hotel telephone line. I've never had a problem.

I recently tried this the other way around. We were coming to Mexico for vacation and I started an account stateside before we left hoping to be able to connect to Prodigy.mx while in Mexico. The Prodigy US website switched me to SBCglobal and mentioned that Prodigy was now SBCglobal. This may be some of my problem.

I recorded the local dialup numbers for most of the cities we would be traveling through. When we got to Potosi, I tried to dial in, but my user name and password weren't recognized. Using a computer in the hotel's business center, I emailed support using my main email account. (should have done this before I left home, of course) I was told they had no relationship with Mexico Prodigy. So my account was useless while we were in Mexico.

Was there another way to handle this? Could I have gotten a "real" Prodigy account instead of the SBCglobal account? We'll be returning, hopefully sooner than later, and I would like to be able to move around and still have connectivity from my hotel room.

All I can tell you is that a close friend of mine who lives in California signed up for a Prodigy account in Mexico using the telephone number of another friend as the billing telephone number. She did this deliberately because Prodigy in Mexico offered connection in both Mexico and the USA. She did this more than a year ago and has had no problem accessing Prodigy either in the USA or while she's traveling in Mexico. I suppose this is what you mean when you say 'a "real" Prodigy account'.

As an alternative if you don’t solve your problem using Prodigy in Mexico you might want to look in to using a Todito card for prepaid Internet dial up access. The cost is very reasonable, depending on which plan you choose. You are not tied to any one phone number in Mexico for billing. They also have many access numbers in The U.S. They are available to purchase in many places in Mexico, probably buying one at an OXXO would be the most convenient. They seem to be only available in Southern California in The U. S. You can buy additional time online.

I must admit that I have not used one myself yet, but I have gotten very good reports from people that have used them. I plan to buy one the next time we go Nob. Next month we are going to visit relatives in Ajijic, unfortunately they have no access numbers there, so I guess I will need to take my laptop to CIA.

Their website is in Spanish, but since you lived in San Miguel for a time, you will probably be able to understand it, depending on your level of Spanish skills.

I am in the S.F. Bay area at this time. I am using my Mexico Prodigy address to access the internet. I use the same address that Esperanza listed. http://www.prodigy.com.mx/cobertura/cobertura_usa.html . I had no trouble accessing the website. As Pete says, they list 8 Sacramento addresses. They all have area code 916 and some of the number are: 244-6911, 256-2414, 282-0194 and 912-2414.

I think this is a Macintosh vs. PC issue.

I, too, cannot get the Prodigy "cobertura" page to give me the access numbers, regardless of what city I choose. This is true for Netscape Navigator 7.1, Mozilla 1.3.1, and Internet Explorer 5.1 for the Mac.

However, it works perfectly with Internet Explorer from a friend's PC.

I've also found TelMex's website to be very Microsoft- and PC-centric. Many features will not work with Navigator and/or with a Mac.

I'm typing this message now from Seattle, WA, using my Prodigy user name and password, and a local Seattle access number. As stated on the Prodigy page, when using an access number in the U.S., be sure to enter your user name in the form: user@prodigy.net.mx
when your Internet access software asks for your name.

I had the same problem but I realized that my Pop up blocker software would not let the coperta window open. So I momentarily disable the blocker and the window with the phone numbers opens.
Hope this works for you.

I think that must be my problem - I have a pop up blocker on Netscape but nothing on IE as I use it rarely. - Thanks for the information.
