A drive to Dolores Hidalgo for ice cream

It was a lazy Saturday, too hot to walk much, notihng planned until the International Brotherhood dances in the Jardin at 8, and so we went for a drive to Dolores Hidalgo, maybe 25 miles away.

It was an excuse to stop in the numerous ceramic shops along the highway into town, the perfect soup tureen still eluding us, while we made our way to the Plaza Principal. At least five ice cream stands around the square sell cones in unusual flavors: chicharron, mole, avocado, corn, cheese, shrimp, prune, tequila and the expected varieties.

This time I had an orange mole kind, which tasted more like peanut butter today, and plum, which had four whole reconstituted dried prunes complete with pits in a small scoop. Norma had corn, which was mostly a vanilla taste but with pieces of corn kernels, and pina colada. The bees waiting for us in the park had all they wanted, hanging from our napkins sipping on the drips while we ate around them. Some day I wll try the shrimp flavor.

Our favorite Chinese restaurant in the region is in Dolores Hidalgo, the Golden Buddha, but today we had BLTs on our home menu, an excuse to have El Maple's sourdough bread. The city has about 46,000 people though somehow it seems bigger than SMA. It has beautiful churches, historic sites and museums, but today we were only in the mood to windowshop for ceramics and try new flavors of ice cream. Another lovely day.

I love Delores Hidalgo, too. The little museum over there is a real secret. i sometimes forget and take friends on Monday and,of course, it is closed. There ice cream is unique and many flavors-delicious. The church on the zocalo or Jardin has 2 of the wooden hand carved side altars left in Mexico. So many of them were burned during the revolution. I have just learned about the good ice cream in Comonfort. Has anyone tried it? Here come the rains-there go the international dancers..

Don't you love Dolores! One of my favourite restaurants in Dolores is El Rodeo on the Calzada Mariano Balleza at the corner of Calle Dolores Hidalgo (near the market). They specialize in beef dishes there, although you can ask for chicken too. There are no menus -- they just bring the different cuts of beef to your table to show you what they have. Delicious!

Carol,
My parents live in SMA and everytime we visit we MUST go to Delores Hidalgo for pottery but the main reason I go is for carnitas at (I think it is called) Vincente's. Only opened in the mornings......but OH MY, what wonderful carnitas, fresh avacados, fresh, made- before- your -very- eyes tortillas, gorditas.......yummmmm. Think I'll catch the bus tomorrow and head south of the border.
