Am I courting problems here?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have posted before about getting my special construction 1929 Mercedez Gazelle into Mexico and having it as a second car in the Chapala/Ajijic area. Now I read someone saying things which lead me to believe I may be seen as both "flaunting" something which most Mexicans don't have and tempting the marginally honest?

I posted a picture before but will put it again here.

I love this car and it's a lot of fun but I would rather sell it here than lose it in Mexico.

Thoughts?

I don't know why you think it's such a big deal to bring your car to Mexico. Like you would in the states/Canada, you'll keep it garaged when it's not being used. Of course, like anywhere in the world, heads will turn. I have a friend who has a beautiful Model A here in Mazatlan. He parks it like any other car. I have another friend who has a 1963, totally restored, Falcon convertible. I see no reason to assume problems. Where did you get this idea that you will be a target? I think if you had a tricked out Harley Davidson, you'd probably draw more attention.

You've already shown the board the pic of your car, and you've already asked the same question before. You understand that you can temporarily import but a single car. Permit me to suggest that you test the waters of your new locale in Mexico and make the determination for yourself whether those who live in this country would be terribly envious of your prized car.

If your Gazelle is from Miami based "Classic Motor Carriages' company which went out of business many years ago because they never 'delivered the goods' you may have no need to worry. There might br less "flaunting " value than you might think in your car especially if it has (and probably does) a VW engine.

At least if it has a VW engine and running gear, you'll be able to find a mechanic in practically every other block!

Yes, it's from the defunct Miami company but it has a Ford Mustang II V6 eigine and I think a VW transaxle (not sure).

I just don't want to seem to be "high-faloutin" or such but it is a fun car and it won't bottom out.

Thanks.

I saw one of those in Canton (Ohio) whenever I lived there a few years ago. It was a fine looking car. I would not hesitate to take it Mexico if it were me. One advantage of a VW engine might be in having any maintenance done. However Ford engines should not be problem. I have seen many in Mexico. Post a pic of your car I would very much enjoy that. Did you build it yourself? Good Luck with your Gazelle in Mexico.

My biggest worry was servicing and parts when I finally decided to import my European car, not an envy factor or a theft problem. There are Mexicans driving some very nice NEW BMW's, Mercedes, Cadillacs, Ford Lobo truck, etc. around Mexico, to say nothing of the beautifully restored antique cars that we see cruising the streets from time to time. And in case of an accident, the body shop repairmen are very inexpensive.

Thinking that you will be on a pedestal for the car you drive (except for the above mentioned Ford Lobo truck which DOES puts you on a pedestal here in Mazatlan, being somewhat of a Sinaloan status symbol!) will be put to rest once you pass through Guadalajara or any important city and see what others are driving. Good luck with your decision on which car you will bring to Mexico.

I don't think you need to be overly concerned. I saw a Gazelle replica in downtown Guadalajara a few weeks ago and I regularly see one nearly identical to yours being driven by a 17-year-old kid here in my neighborhood. His has black fenders and, from the sound, a Volkswagen engine but it is definitely a Gazelle kit/replica.

Thanks to you all for your input. I really don't have a second choice so I'll figure a way to being it and enjoy it.
