Wireless 'card'?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with Centrino and wireless internet access from Laguna. I'm trying to find out what I need to get that will allow me internet access from anywhere in the house. I can't get an answer that makes sense to me from Rod. Here's the email reponse he sent me.

'...I recall we installed a Linksys WET Bridge if this is the case you would need a
wireless DSL router any brand will do but in the past we have used D-Link Netgear and Linksys...'

I went to the Linksys site but there are a number of options and I don't know what to get.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I use the Linksys wireless router model WRT54G. It works just fine in conjunction with the WET11 bridge Laguna installs. Technically Laguna is an 802.11b network (11mb max), but the G router (for 802.11g - 54mb max) has a little more error handling especially through walls.

One other thing to note is that if you have one of those 2.4 ghz cordless phones, they will wreak havoc with the wireless network which also happens to be 2.4 ghz. It will knock you off every time the phone rings.

While on the topic of wireless connectivity we would like all visitors and residents to know the following:

Thanks to the efforts of volunteer, John Carey, the Biblioteca now offers a wireless “hotspot” which is accessible in the courtyard and Café Santa Ana during normal library hours. This means that any member of the public can connect to the Internet free of charge by means of a wireless-enabled laptop or handheld computer. Most new laptops have this feature built inside the case. Owners of older laptops with a pc card slot can purchase a separate wireless adapter card that must indicate compatibility with the 802.11b standard. No password or subscription is necessary and there is no time limit imposed for usage. Anyone who is unsure whether the laptop they own will work, or who has any other questions, is encouraged to come to the computer center for advice from one of the volunteers.

Welcome to the 21st century Libby :) where the younger generation speaks a new language and people like us get confused when we hear terms like ethernet bridge, cat5e enhanced ethernet cables. etc.

If you've got the time, it might be fun to learn this new language, or should you wish help installing your wireless router, I can recommend several young teenagers who understand these terms and who can set you up in a matter of seconds.

They can also be (router) brand specific. You can either get one of those Routers from Rod who has them in stock at the ISP, or from any number of computer outlets to include the one mentioned below.

The first boy I would recommend is Stephen a teenager from Germany who lives lakeside with his parents. He works at the computer store below the movie theater in Ajijic. As I recollect the office telephone # is 766-4343. The other boy is Francisco who lives in Ajijic with his parents. The family telephone # is 766-3904. Both speak English well, Either one can do the router configuration in a couple of minutes.

I hope the telephone #'s are correct. I'm up north for a short visit and am going by memory.

Thank you all. This is very helpful. So I can buy the Linksys WRT54G which is their product number for the 802.11g wireless router at Best Buy for $99 (my daughter is coming to visit in a couple weeks, she can bring it with her). Rod says it costs more in Mexico, not sure how much. Presumably I don't need the wireless card because my notebook should have it already, correct?

So much for 'plug and play' right?! Or, unplug in this instance.

Libby,

I would not assume you don't need the wireless card, make sure. Many laptops come with some kind of statement like Wireless Ready but that doesn't mean what it sounds like, they still need the wireless card. Since you've got someone coming down that can bring it, make sure of what you need.
