High levels of lead found in Mexican candies

In a report published by the Orange County Register (CA) tests have revealed that many Mexican candies imported and sold in Southern California have tested positive for high levels of lead. The article indicated that warnings have been issued repeatedly over the years, but no action had been taken to inform the public or the manufacturers of the candies. When they were notified of the latest tests, the makers said that was the first they heard of it. Supposedly, the contamination occurs in the processing of the raw materials for the candies for being shipped to the makers. Only one brand was mentioned by name in the articles, Chaca Chaca, a candy made of apple pulp and chile powder.

Just came out in the local paper here in south Texas:
"The Texas Department of Health announced this week that tests conducted on more than a dozen Mexican candies revealed their lead content is below the federal regulatory limits and are safe for consumption....the brands tested did not include Mexican candies already banned by FDA in April."
