Prodigy; Are there problems?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Several folks have commented to me, well here is a quote "By the way, I have been experiencing some major problems with web pages that won't display when I use my Prodigy Infinitum account"

Here is what I was told by the competition. When you type in a name like www.yahoo.com, something called a DNS server converts that name to a numeric address. Apparently Prodigy doesn't have enough capacity and some of you will simply be timed out before the DNS server has time to help you.

How serious a problem is this with the prodigy user? Does this happen all of the time, or very occasionally? I would love to read your comments thereon.

I have that problem every day, usually several times a day. I just keep hitting the GO button, and the page will finally open. I have a dail-up Telmex/Prodigy.

I have had plain old Prodigy dialup for 4 years or more and have never had that problem.

I just returned from visiting a friend who has Prodigy Infinitum running at 256Kpbs. I honestly could tell no difference between her download speed and mine, and mine allegedly runs at 50. I was glad of the chance to compare, since the niggling thought of 'upgrading' has been flitting through my brain. Forget it, sez I.

I saw an advertisement for Prodigy dialup where they charge by the minute used. The advertisement said 15 centavos per minute. Now that's not bad. I'm going to have to look into that further. Maybe there are some hidden charges that I didn't see or couldn't understand. I'm still learning Spanish

It doesn't cost that much to use Prodigy dial-up if you pay a year in advance. What is it? $1,499 plus IVA? But if I were only charged by the minute when logged on I could compare the services provided by Prodigy to my present server and see if there is any difference and if so, determine which is better.

Pete, it's some new thing they're offering--a prepaid card, similar to the Todito card. I don't know exactly how it works, but it precludes having to pay for a month or a year up front. You buy minutes instead. I don't even know if it's system-wide; I saw the ad for it a few weeks ago pero no se me pegó bien (but it didn't stick very well in my mind).

See, you get Spanish lessons here along with your tech info. LOL...

We have just done some checking on that very service. It is perfect for short term renters, or a situation where someone has left an outstanding phone bill against the property. A friend of ours ordered this service for a revenue property a couple of weeks ago, but it hasn't been installed yet. Usually Telmex is faster in this area so I suspect it is a popular promotion.

I have the little flyer in front of me. It is called Multifon and the initial cost is $999.00 MXP to set it all up (cheaper than a regular line installation by nearly half, no?) with a down payment of $150.00 and 2 months at $424.50. There is no monthly rent, they supply the phone (cordless or not cordless), you will have basic internet dial up capability, and receive calls completely free. Simply buy the Multifon card of $50 or $100 pesos for phone and internet dial up use. With hook up you receive free $100 pesos for long distance calls to Canada or USA.

I was told 1 peso a minute for internet use, which would be fine for sending and receiving emails. There is a small recharge fee every few months if you aren't using the phone for outgoing calls regularly. For more information call 01-800-123-0101, or pop by your friendly neighborhood Telmex store.

I heard about this pay in advance service with Telmex and it is great for short term renters.

I'm talking about another mail stuffer that came out several weeks ago from TelMex. It talked about a pay as you use dial-up internet connection with Prodigy where the charge was 15 centavos per minute.

I'm in the middle of moving (next door) or I would have been able to find a copy of the advertisement. No big deal the office is across the street from TelMex, I can always get another flier.
