Fried Green Tomatoes in Morelia?

Can't Post |
This morning's Morelia newspapers had an article and photo on the front page about the remains of a dead man found in a house where tamales were prepared for sale in front of two hospitals. Yes, the dead man had been made into tamales.

I am not making this up, but I will invite Esteban to delete this post in a day or so.

Hey UJ, if your car weren't in the shop we could run over to Morelia and do film at eleven.

Good god, Jennifer, please--we want the details. This IS the kitchen forum, after all: were they made with red chile or green chile, con rajas or WHAT? And did they wrap them in regular ol' corn husks or use the skin or....

OMG. This could be an all-time low here in the kitchen. How come I am laughing so hard?

This is really interesting, but the post leaves more questions than answers:
  1. the newspapers aren't any good /or
  2. the tamale joint wasn't any good /or
  3. the hospitals serve bad food and aren't any good /or
  4. the dead man offended somebody who wasn't any good /or
  5. don't trust strangers /and
  6. why?

Maybe what we have here is a Mexican "Sweeney Todd".

Now that I think about it.......

......could this be an old Aztec recipe? Was this guy a Spaniard? As I recall, the Aztecs occasionally served Spaniards up in pieces with chiles.

Today’s Provincia can be found at http://www.provincia.com.mx/pdf/local.pdf -- but only the front page.

LaVoz de Michoacan had the best coverage, but today’s paper won’t be online in its full glory until tomorrow. Go to http://www.voznet.com.mx/lavoz/pdf.html

Today, MiMorelia has coverage at http://www.mimorelia.com/...5f784d5904da0b6be19e

El Sol de Morelia has the story today at http://www.elsoldemorelia.com.mx/default.asp

I didn’t see anything about it in Cambio de Michoacan, but it’s not that kind of paper.

About the victim, this much is known. He’s Heriberto, who sold aprons (another story has it that he sold tablecloths) at Mercado Independencia and San Juan and offended the cook.

Five pressure cookers were in use at the site, cooking up what reportedly tastes “just like chicken.”

This afternoon, at the Cheff’s we joked that in the US, the preferred method of cooking cadavers is in barbeque sauce.

It probably beats cat meat, dog meat, old road kill and at least it happened in Morelia and not Mazatlan. I've had Mexican friends say never to eat tacos that cost less than 4 pesos. Where's ET to give us the exact chemical dangers of such a taco?

It probably beats ... dog meat,

So the tamale man is quoted as saying on Spanish TV up here in Iowa, according to Florencia.

I took a printer copy of the article from El Sol to Florencia's house last night when she invited us for tamales. Most everyone took a brief glance at it and set it aside until after the meal when all read it in detail. We had a few good jokes about why Nacho wasn't eating with us.

We are back in Iowa for the summer and folks up here are keeping up with the news.

When we lived in our beloved Zoque village in Chiapas, one of the things we noticed was that there was a small, stable population of adult dogs, not exactly strays, but living on the dirt streets in front of the neighborhood houses. The same old bitches kept getting pregnant on a regular basis. It was obvious from looking at them when they were still nursing, but no young puppies ever appeared either following their moms or playing with the children. We strongly suspected that fat suckling puppies were being turned into taco fillings (rather than just drown them right after birth) before the villagers had to start giving them kitchen scraps or, god forbid, real dog food.

There was one such older dog who hung out mostly near our house. We had to go back to the US for a couple of weeks, during which time she had her puppies. We did not see her for a while after we got back. When she finally came over, she was still nursing and had chewed through a thin rope by which she must have been tied to keep her taking care of them until they gained enough weight to dress out! We never did see any of the puppies. When she was back to her slender self, she was no longer tied up and visited us frequently.

No, that was one of those questions I didn't ask because I didn't want to know the answer for sure.

A number of years ago in Los Angeles, after the large influx of immigrants from SE Asia, dognapping became such a problem that a law was passed forbidding eating a dog. At the time there was a joke making the rounds -- What do you call a Vietnamese man with three dogs? A rancher.
