When we lived in our beloved Zoque village in Chiapas, one of the things we noticed was that there was a small, stable population of adult dogs, not exactly strays, but living on the dirt streets in front of the neighborhood houses. The same old bitches kept getting pregnant on a regular basis. It was obvious from looking at them when they were still nursing, but no young puppies ever appeared either following their moms or playing with the children. We strongly suspected that fat suckling puppies were being turned into taco fillings (rather than just drown them right after birth) before the villagers had to start giving them kitchen scraps or, god forbid, real dog food. There was one such older dog who hung out mostly near our house. We had to go back to the US for a couple of weeks, during which time she had her puppies. We did not see her for a while after we got back. When she finally came over, she was still nursing and had chewed through a thin rope by which she must have been tied to keep her taking care of them until they gained enough weight to dress out! We never did see any of the puppies. When she was back to her slender self, she was no longer tied up and visited us frequently. No, that was one of those questions I didn't ask because I didn't want to know the answer for sure.
