can't get my email from Prodigy Infinitum

Can't Post | Private Reply
Last night Outlook began asking for my password and then not giving me my email. I haven't changed any of the settings. Does anyone have any idea why?

I would phone up a tech at prodigy and ask him walk you through a couple of simple checks. It might be as simple as re entering your password. The fact that you have not changed any of your settings does not mean that your settings have not changed.

Obviously you don't have Prodigy. Calling them is an exercise in futility.

I've checked my settings, they are right. They have apparently stopped accepting my user name. It used to be zipf or zipf01, because I used to have dialup. Now it will only accept zipf01.

Why is calling Prodigy an exercise in futility? This happens to me once in a while, I call them, and they fix it in a second while I'm on the line. It's just some glitch in their system.

Excuse my dumb question -- How do you call Prodigy? I have never seen a number for them. Do they have English-speaking techs?

I sat at lagunanet (a local ISP in Ajijic) for 2 hours today where I volunteer answering the simpler technical questions. I leave the heavy duty technical questions to the owner. We got two technical calls this morning, one of which I could answer, the other that was more quickly and expertly answered by the owner.

My point? Change ISPs if you are not getting the service you want. :)

My advise? Learn Spanish. That sounds rude and I don't mean it that way, but when I have wanted tech information from Prodigy, and there wasn't anyone available to speak English, I have always gotten someone who speaks Spanish right away. Now, my Spanish isn't that good, but I was able to get the info I needed.

Jusf for laughs. Yesterday I got a phone call from a lady who could not get her computer screen to come on. She was sure that it was the internet service provider's fault. And was angry at me when I told her we had no control over her screen. She told me in a very huffy voice that we always say it is not our fault when her computer stops working and hung up on me.

She phones about once every two weeks with like problems. One time she even complained that her toilet was overflowing. I'm not sure what she wanted us to do.

Prodigy's number is 01-800-123-2222. They have a few techs who speak English, but it's much easier and very fast to get a Spanish-speaking tech. They are extremely courteous and generally very knowledgable.

One time a few years ago I had a continuous problem that took hours on the phone over the course of days to try to resolve. The problem continued and continued and finally (get this) they sent a tech out from Guadalajara who spent nearly three hours sitting at my computer working on the problem. And--better yet--he finally figured out what it was, showed me the trouble log on the Prodigy internal workings page that he was viewing on my monitor, and admitted that it was a fault IN THE SERVER and told me how to work around it.

And there was no charge for their service.

I figure it's well worth the 1499 pesos/year I pay for dialup.

Yes! That is the number that got success! I happened to find it about 15 minutes before I read this post and am glad you posted the number because it would not have occured to me.

In most other respects, though, I'm not as dumb as a box of rocks.

Assuming I don't know Spanish, I think I might want to get my email before I learn it. But that is good advice under most any situation.

Obviously, you have convinced your client you are a miracle worker.

I too have prodigy and dial 01-(800) 123-2222. For help in English I was given Extension 19270. I assume the number and extension are still in service. I never had to use them. I have had excellent service from them.

I agree with the above posts that Prodigy is always prompt with responding to problems. You may have to hold longer if the English speaking Techie is busy, but that's life here.

One thing I do want to share is that you should change dialup passwords from time to time, or at least once after your initial sign up password with Prodigy. Here is why. I often had problems getting online, and the response was something along the lines that my sign-on was invalid because it was already in use. It would usually go away within the hour but one day it was several hours before I could get online. I was furious, as I work online, so hubby called Prodigy and was told that they were very sorry, but our status showed that we were online, and someone was using our account and there was nothing they could do. Huh? Hubby investigated and was told something that made my hair stand up on the back of my neck. Some employees have generously shared our sign-ons and passwords with their friends. When we dial up and get told we can't sign on because our accounts are in use....that is exactly the case...someone has dialed up and is using our log on to access the internet gratis. After changing the initial password this problem has disappeared. So do change your passwords at least once. This may be a Mazatlàn thing, but still worth changing your password to avoid the inconvenience later, just in case.

That said, other than sharing our account with the local nonpaying internet community, I find Prodigy more than adequate for my needs. I am exploring Infinitum for near future.

When we call that 800 number for Prodigy--from anywhere in the República--we are connected to their techs in Mexico City, not to a local office. What Marlene says is quite interesting and actually happened to me once as well--and then I changed my password, and it's never happened again. Good advice.
