Chichin Itza closed?

I heard that Chichin Itza, Tulum, and other Mayan sites are now closed to the public, or people can only look at them now from a distance. Is it true? I finally have a chance to visit them for the first time this winter, and now I hear this. Does anyone have different information? If it is true, does anyone have a connection to whom I might pay the "mordida" to let this old college Profesor de español see them up close? Thanks.

While I haven't been down there in a year or so, I find it VERY hard to believe that these sites would close. Too much money coming in and too many people depending on them for a living to close them. There may be small sections closed; for example, at Tulum the inside of The Temple of the Frescos is closed to the public to keep people from taking pictures of the paintings and further deteriorating their image. BTW, if you go to any of the archaelogical zones on Sunday admission is free. My in-laws have a house in Tulum, I'll ask them if they've heard anything.<p>

as Dan says, there are always areas being worked on and for your safety, these are temporarily closed. The site is large yet easily walked, and unforgettable. Each Mayan site is different and wonderful to visit, you just have to decide what ones are on your chosen route each trip.
The caves are a different story (just as in France and Spain) and the paintings on the walls deep within the earth have lost so much of their definition and color. I could have cried the last time I was there........so different from our first visit years ago. And they truly try so hard to preserve these treasures, limited amount and time of light, no photographs, etc. A tragedy.
