getting utilities (cable, electric) with FMT status only?

Can't Post |
Hi there everyone,

We are doing a temp. 6 month trial move to the area in November, myself, hubby, and two children, ages 8 and 9. I am a web designer, own a couple of commercial websites and have some prospective side work down there. Hubby will be homeschooling the kids for now until we decide if we want to apply for FM3 and stay. We are coming from Canada and are driving down.

We have a million and one questions, of course, the number one right now I am wondering about is if we are going to be able to obtain utilities in a condo/apt/house in our names with just FMT status? I need to have cable or phone as I have to have high-speed internet access in order to do my business.

We are looking to rent a condo/small home for a 6 month period, one that is fully furnished of course, hopefully in Playa, perhaps a little further south such as Puerto Aventuras or Akumal if it is any more affordable. We're not independantly wealthy or anything, just 30-somethings living life on the edge, so we're looking for affordable here. Any ballpark figures out there on rates for two bedroom condos, fully furnished, with pools? I know it's hard to say, I think we'll just have to get down there, rent a hotel, and just look around till we find something.

Finally, will we catch any trouble at the border for bringing in a few suitcases of toys/clothes/supplies for the Hekab Be Biblioteca in Akumal? Will they let us do that?

Any advice anyone can give us for the drive down, securing our minivan overnight while we sleep on the drive down, finding a place to rent, or anything else, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

First of all, let me congratulate you on both making the move and on making a 6-month test of it. Good thinking. For a lot of useful info, go to http://www.mexconnected.com/...ivinginmexindex.html and read everything you can find--especially from people who have done what you are doing or have done what you are doing. There really is nothing new under the sun.

You will probably rent a house with the lights, water, etc. already in someone else's name so it shouldn't be a problem. Driving down, you will find some "garage motels" where you drive into the place and they will be safe. You shouldn't have any trouble with the toys and books.

Good luck.

Thanks, Jim, I didn't realize it was you moderating this board...how have you been?! I don't know if you remember me from a few of the other boards a few years ago.

I will check out the link. Do you happen to know of any property management companies that have online listings for rentals, or do you think my best bet is just to come down and see what we find when we get there, kind of eliminate the middle man?

Is that you?? I never know--you see there was this little sweeet young thing in Chesapeake bay midnight swimming when I was 27 and.......but that's another story!! Sure I remember you. Good to know you are still around and loving the area and getting ready to join us. There are property management companies here and I had a huge list but had a hard disk crash and lost everything recently so will have to look them up again. Strat out with "real estate cancun" in google or yahoo. There are lots. It will give you an idea and you can maybe contact some and maybe even set up some appointments for when you get here. I will look up some info and post it in a day or two if you don't have any luck. Costa REalty is a good one in the area just to get you started http://www.costarealty.com.mx

Hello,

I was browsing the web researching the Yucatan when I stumbled on your conversation. Ironically, my husband and I are doing the same thing except we are moving permanently from Kodiak, Alaska to Mexico. My husband is Mexican (from Tapachula, Chiapas) and I also have 2 children ages 2 and 6. We are trying to find info on buying some property, starting a business(local economy), private schools, expatriate community. Do you all know of some good resources for us?

Thanks,

Jessi

I suggest you read other posts and responses to this and other messages on the board--especially start with

"First of all, let me congratulate you on both making the move and on making a 6-month test of it. Good thinking. For a lot of useful info, go to http://www.mexconnected.com/...ivinginmexindex.html ........................" With your husband being Mexican, it will make the purchase of land easier but if he has been living outside of Mexico for a long time then other cultural and language adaptations should also be considered.
