Purepecha Fiesta

On October 12th we all have an opportunity to not only learn more about one of the most powerful indigenous cultural groups of our part of Mexico, but to interact with them on a very personal level.
Xill Fessenden is arranging for the first Purepecha Fiesta to be held in our area. The Purepecha, called Tarascans by the Spanish, held the second largest empire in Mexico and were never defeated by the Aztecs. Today they practice traditional as well as Spanish-introduced crafts in the Lake Patzcuaro area.
Lots of volunteers are needed to make this event a success. You can call Xill at 766-1676 to offer your help. For more info look at the Sept. issues of El Ojo del Lago or the Lake Chapala Review or back issues of the Guadalajara Reporter.
For more info about the Purepecha look elsewhere on Mexconnect for a couple of very good articles. One by Jennifer Rose is linked below and the other is at mexconnect.com/mex_/history/tarasco.html.
We seldom get a chance to personally participate in this type of activity so this is a rare learning opportunity into which we're being invited. I'm looking forward to it.

I've been away since the end of August and don't know the details on this -- but I'll be back by then. Where will this be taking place? Thanks for the heads up on this.

Hi Georgia,
Most of the festivities will be on the Plaza in Ajijic. There will also be a procession from Six Corners to the Plaza. the Fiesta will run from the 12th to the 20th. Lots of artisans, writers, musicians, dancers, and traditional crafts and food.
This will be an excellent time for Christmas shopping also. I intend to spend some time with the traditional healers.
UD
