Hi,
I need information on Riberas del Pilar. Is it safe? Is it nicely located? I might be renting from Chapala Realty and want to make sure I am making the right decision. Thanks

Anna:
Im mexican and I lived for a year in Riberas del pilar unfortunatly I was robbed two times!!!
Is a very insecure neigborhood, I belive that with your budget and you necesities you can find something safer somewhere else. It is really DANGEREUS to live there, plase dont risk yourself in my country, they are many great places that you can find!!
Thanks
Laura

There is nothing inherently wrong with the Riberas area. In and of itself, it is nice: quiet, safe, quaintly charming. However, I know lots of people who start out there (because of the lower rent costs) but don't stay long for one reason and one reason only: it is not within a convenient walking distance of anything. So if you are prepared to drive everywhere or walk long distances (to grocery store and restaurants, for example), you'll do fine.

Budget is no more than $400 for one bedroom and will probably stay for a long term but do not want to make a long time commitment unless I love the place...Thanks

Another perspective from someone who used to live next to Riberas - it is a rather run-down area, with more garbage strewn around than most other places. In fact, a Mexican woman last year got so disgusted with the condition of Riberas that she tried to organize neighborhood clean-ups. I don't know how far that went.
Yes, there are some nice houses, but the streets are poorly maintained in many places. It sort of depends on where you are in Riberas. You may or may not be happy renting sight-unseen.

Have you tried the interactive Map?

If you click on the link below, it will take you to Tony Burton's new interactive PDF map of the region (you will need Acrobat reader - a free program from adobe.com).
When it is open, click on the book mark for San Antonio and scroll towards the right
and there will be Riberas - all the streets too!
Enjoy exploring!
Oh, the map was updated on October 1 to include more info.

Seasonally.
During the dry season they are the salt flat areas on the road towards Colima.
During the rainy season, they fill to maybe a foot or two (in parts) and, as the highway goes right through the middle, it is quite spectacular and a photgrapher's paradise with scenes of mirrored fence posts, flocks of thousands of birds etc.
Suerte
David

If you click on the link below and scroll to the middle of the page, you will see a picture of Laguna Zapotlan. It is located in Zapotlan El Grande (Ciudad Guzman). The lake is always full, you will see fishermen, boaters and even some jet skiers on this lake. Ciudad Guzman is located on the road to Colima ( about 70 miles south of Guadalajara). Population about 90,000 to 100,000. If you take the libre, instead of the toll road, it passes right by the lake.

Sorry late in answering, but I was in Mexico City for 5 days. Don't know that much about the lake even though I go past it often. There are always fishermen there. There is a small beach area where families come to feed the wild ducks. They have a storage building where they store some racing shells and have severeal small docks. I have seen some people on ski jets. They cut some kind on a floating reed from the lake that they dry. I am sure the lake is polluted. Not sure what kind of fish they catch. There is a jogging/bike trail from the city to the lake.

We have three (different) friends who live in Riberas. They are quite comfortable and we've never heard them complain, or worry about their safety. although one of them has an ADT system in their home. He says it was just a precaution ...they felt a bit isolated where they are... but he says they've never had a problem.
It is quite a large subdivision with a variety of locations. It is relatively flat so views of the lake (everyone has views of the mountains) will vary ...more if you're in the first block or so up from the beach or if you have a second story mirador.
