Why are some threads locked?

I wanted to comment on a post but the thread was locked to posted replies. How come?

Thanks.

Threads are locked when they've strayed too far from the original post, have become lengthy or prolix, and for any reason it seems appropriate to close discussion. Feel free to start up a new thread, picking up on the same or a related topic, to start the discussion anew.

When a thread becomes lengthly it takes up the entire page and other posts are not visible.
