Hi everyone! I'm brand-new to this site today and am very grateful to have found it. My husband and I are seriously considering retiring in Mexico, and after reading several different books, think that Mazatlan may well be the place to go. I have a few questions for now:

1. Is there an English-speaking library? I'm an avid reader and would be lost without books.

2. Is there a newcomers group?

3. Are there opportunities for volunteer work?

I grew up by the sea in England, and all my vacations have been to seaside resorts in south Florida. I'm used to heat and humidity - especially heat - I'm now living in Tucson, AZ. Much of my work as a dialysis social worker is with the local Hispanic and Mexican population and I enjoy this population immensely. I would love to start talking to people who are living in Mazatlan and loving it. Tell me why you do.

Thanks for listening to me.

Jennie

Welcome to Mexconnect!

Mazatlán is indeed a good place to live. It is a nice sized city with friendly people and lots of activity. Of course the miles of beaches are great too!

There are numerous organizations, and if so inclined you can be very busy with good causes. Some of these include Hands Across the Border, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Friends of the Animals, Conrehabit (wildlife preservation), as well as the American Legion, and the Vineyard Ministries.

English library, http://www.mazinfo.com/library/

Friends of Mexico - http://www.mazinfo.com/fom/

You will find it useful to take Spanish classes prior to moving to Mexico, no matter where you choose to relocate. Good luck with your planning.

Jennie, I just joined this site and in looking for any discussion on dialysis treatment in Mexico, I stumbled upon your note. I too am looking into living in Mexico, at least on a parttime basis until retirement, but my husband has Polycystic Kidney Disease and has been a hemodialysis patient for 7 years or so. Have you been able to ascertain what type of facilities are available in Mexico and how American insurance would apply, if at all? If you have any info or know who I could contact, I would certainly be most appreciative.

I know Mazatlan has a fairly new dialysis center but I'm not sure exactly where it is. You need to contact your present insurance carrier to see if they would pay for treatment outside the US. If they will pay, and you are interested in Mazatlan, send me a private message and I'll see if I can round up some more information.
